Jonathan (4)

Hello everyone! This is the next chapter of Jonathan! Hope you enjoy it. This one has quite a bit of action, at least in my opinion. If you haven’t read any of the story before, go to link

Chapter Four

Jonathan grinned at himself in the dirty mirror that had one month ago held the face of a scared, anxious individual who had just been through a huge explosion and sported a fresh cut on his cheek. Now, his expression was a confident one, and the cut had faded to raised scar tissue. Now his arms were full of muscle, and he was trained in the art of the thief. How he had changed from the cowed ten-year old boy crouching by his fallen father!
Jonathan strode through the hallway, nodding to his fellow thieves. He wore completely red, at odds with the black most thieves preferred. And today was the day he would attempt his crafter’s quest.
The Crafter’s Quest was a journey each thief had to take into the sewers of Kerning City. There, they would encounter monsters and have to collect material needed to create their weapon of choice – whether it be a dagger, short sword, or in Jonathan’s case – a set of shuriken throwing stars.
Making his way through the labyrinth that was the headquarters of the thieves, Jonathan sighted Stryder at the end of a low tunnel. His face was grim as he beckoned Jonathan towards him. “This is a test of courage and ingenuity. You have as long as you want to collect the materials necessary to construct your weapon. Go.” He said unceremoniously. And then he pushed Jonathan through the hole at the end of the tunnel that was the entrance of the Crafter’s Quest.
The tunnel was somehow closed behind him, and he was plunged into complete darkness. Fumbling with his pouch, he pulled out a shuriken and infused it with his essence. Since his first infusion, he had learned several things, taught to him by Stryder. His essence was ice, cold, and the opposite of his mentor’s essence, which was fire and heat. He had learnt how to speed up his infusion process so it was almost instantaneous – much improved from the several minutes it had taken him to first infuse a star.
He held the glowing blue star out in front of him and viewed the tunnel in its dim luminescence for the first time. Sickly green slime dripped down the walls and water sloshed against the soles of Jonathan’s shoes. He continued to walk for a while, before beginning to hear something. He strained his ears. Thump. Thump. Thump. It was a rhythmic thumping, getting closer and closer. There was also another sound it emitted – but it was hard to place. The best Jonathan could do was describe it as a sort of squelching. And then – it appeared.
It was huge! A blue gob of disgusting effluence and its small eyes were fixed on Jonathan! He pulled out two stars quickly and threw them at the slime – but to no avail. The stars fixed in the jelly bulk of the creature, quivering slightly. Jonathan figured the best chance he had was to evade the creature and then escape – this was no time to play the hero. But then he noticed something glinting in the centre of gob monster, something shiny and flat. He figured it had something to do with the making of his stars. Although it wasn’t the time or place, and despite of the situation he was in, Jonathan rolled his eyes.
Still the creature oozed closer to Jonathan. This was going to take some fancy footwork. He quickly infused several stars with essence, and waved them in front of him. Much to his disappointment, the monster wasn’t magically transfixed by their glowing, allowing him to quickly nail it with a dozen quickly thrown shuriken. Instead, it didn’t register the light at all. Suddenly it dawned on Jonathan – the thing was blind! After all, what use would eyes be in eternal darkness? The creature was following him through hearing and scent, although there were no pointy ears or olfactory organs visible. Quickly he stifled his scuffling steps, instead employing his stealth training to walk quickly and lightly on the balls of his feet. He slowed his breathing, and began to move slowly and deliberately also. Scent was something he could nothing about, but that didn’t seem to matter as a look of confusion flashed in the blue blob’s tiny eyes and Jonathan tried vainly not to laugh.
He concentrated on drawing a dozen shuriken from the pouch at his hip, holding them all in his various splayed fingers, now somewhat resembling two long legged and very sharp spiders. Slowly, very slowly he extended his energy into all the stars simultaneously and they began to glow. Jonathan couldn’t help grinning – this had to be one of the coolest looking things he had learnt. Then he leapt up, finally making a real noise after minutes of silence, drawing the attention of the massive beast in front of him so its eyes stared in his vague direction. Then, in the air, he leapt into action, flicking his wrists so a dozen blue shuriken sprayed from his hands, hitting the eyes and the surrounding areas. The monster let out the equivalent of a cry of pain if it had a mouth, which actually resulted in something closer to an earthquake from deep within it. Then it charged forward, disrupting its bulky blue body so chunks of goo sprayed from it as it jumped. Without warning Jonathan was enveloped in choking, cold, disgusting slime. His eyesight was blurred, but he could see the shiny object he assumed he needed for his shuriken crafting. Pushing through the sludgy consistency of the monster, he grabbed it – it was a cold sheet of metal. He had found one of the objects for his crafting! He was on his way to creating his very own stars. But first he had to live through being enveloped in slime. What could he do?
Jonathan was running out of air, and was tortured by images of him gasping in the blue blob, its slime running down his throat and asphyxiating and drowning him simultaneously. His pouch full of stars jabbed at his hip, stabbing into his flesh. His stars! That was the solution – but it was definitely going to hurt.
His mind flashed back to a week ago – a lesson with Stryder. A single star lay on the mat before them. “Infuse it Jonathan – it’s a new technique. Remote infusion allows you to add your essence to a star without actually touching it.” But even though he tried for over an hour, Jonathan couldn’t muster the focus and ability to infuse the star. Would now be the time? There was only one way to find out. And this time, he wasn’t just infusing the star. He was going to put enough energy in it to make it explode.
Summoning all his courage and skill, Jonathan began to stretch his essence out into the void. read more

Jonathan (3)

Hey everyone! This is the third chapter of Jonathan, and I really enjoyed writing it. Hope you guys like it too.

Chapter Three

Jonathan awoke in a cramped, dark room. A single torch hung on the wall, and this lengthened the shadows of the room, and through the open door a hallway Jonathan could see. He attempted to get up, but his aching ribs would not allow it. Stryder appeared in the doorway. When he saw Jonathan was awake, he smiled.
“Young master Jonathan. You’re awake – excellent. How are you feeling?”
“I feel…alright,” said Jonathan, hesitating for a second when he hard how croaky his voice was. Jonathan came to give him a hand out of bed and once up, Jonathan could stand quite easily. He glanced into a rusted mirror on the wall and saw his own face, but harder. There was a long horizontal graze across his cheekbone that would probably leave a scar. He sighed. Then he followed Stryder down the long hallway.
Jonathan joined three surly looking thieves at the meal table, and a bowl of watery but warm soup was laid in front of him.
“You doing basic training?” spoke one of the thieves, a man with numerous piercings who continued to toss a large dagger into the air and catch it by its tip.
“I…don’t know…” said Jonathan, looking curiously at Stryder
“He’s starting today Riff” said Stryder. “The boy shows promise, judging from how he escaped from Lucy.”
The thief Riff widened his eyes and went back to his soup.
Jonathan stood in an empty sewer with Lucy. The room was roughly circular, and deep underground. The walls were unpleasantly damp, as was the floor. Jonathan was glad he was wearing boots.
“Here,” said Lucy, tossing Jonathan a short sword. “I have been told I must instruct you in short sword and dagger work, of which I am a master of. I will hopefully be able to teach you the great techniques of the most famous of dagger thieves. We will see. Now, begin.”
Jonathan had thought he would perhaps be able to hold his own, and maybe even get in a few nicks of his own. He had practised with a short sword in the four years since he had left his father. But then they started to spar – and Lucy was fast. She fought with a malice that Jonathan supposed had spread from the taxi incident. Several times he was nicked or cut lightly, but not once did he manage to touch Lucy. His frustration grew. Then his eyes widened as he saw her red dagger begin to shine white. Luminescence trailed from its tip. She was holding a bar of light that moved so fast Lucy’s hands could not be seen. Then he felt her dagger’s handle smash into his nose.
“You are SLOW! Disgraceful! Your arms are weak and your style pathetic. I do not wish to waste my time with someone such as you. I have never seen someone with less talent.”
Her dagger slowly returned to its natural colour as these words rained down upon Jonathan and blood from his nose rained down on the floor.
“Our lesson is over. I have seen enough. Back tomorrow – although it will be a waste of time.” Lucy said, her voice dripping with malevolence.
Next were lessons with the shuriken. Stryder was to teach this to Jonathan, and he was very excited. He liked Stryder, and had always thought shuriken were cool.
He stepped into the long, brightly lit sewer that was the shuriken training area. Stryder was there, tossing a single star up into the air and snatching it back again. He grinned when he saw Jonathan
“We commence shuriken training now. Here is your first set of stars, and a beginner’s glove. You’re already physically fit, so we won’t have to run through the boring arm exercises. Let’s begin with accuracy and then maybe move onto…techniques.”
Jonathan fitted the glove to his hand and examined the stars he had been given. They were simple metal, with four points but they were his. His own weapons. Jonathan promised himself he would learn to be good at shuriken no matter what it took.
The first star he attempted to throw at the target at the end of the sewer missed by a wide metre. He flushed, but Stryder steadied his hand. “Look. Think. Throw,” he said. Jonathan’s next throw was better – flying slowly but at least hitting the target. He grinned.
The practice went for hours, with Jonathan’s slow improvement evident. He hit the target every time, and was faster, but he still hadn’t hit the dead middle. He was sweating, his left arm ached, but it was brilliant. Finally he was learning something worthwhile. Then Stryder decided it was time to stop.
“Now you have improved your throw, it’s time to learn some techniques. There are two types of techniques when infusing shuriken with power – physically and with magical essence. In the next test, we will discover which of these you are inclined towards. Sit, please, and place one of your stars in front of you. Two hands on it, and remove your glove. Then focus on moving something of yourself into the star. It’s rather hard to explain, and should be found intuitively. It could take hours, or minutes. Begin.”
In the end, it took ten minutes. An unpleasant feeling spread through Jonathan’s arms, and he opened his eyes. The tips of his shuriken were glowing a blue-white. Stryder was grinning like a maniac. “Don’t stop!” he told Jonathan. “It may feel unpleasant, but what you are doing is quite correct.”
Jonathan couldn’t explain the process he had used to infuse the star. The feeling, he imagined, was rather like having string dragged through every vain in his arm simultaneously. The star was glowing completely now, an electric blue. “Stop!” said Stryder. Jonathan relinquished his hold on the star and its glow faded slowly.
“This is excellent Jonathan! You have a magical predisposition! We haven’t had thief who uses magical infusions since…Lucy. Strange. We will have to start you on more advanced techniques immediately. After that, the crafter’s quest will be imperative to your success. You are dismissed.”
Jonathan’s head was filled with buzzing thoughts. Magical shuriken infusions? And Lucy had the same sort of power as him? The crafter’s quest? It would all have to wait until tomorrow. Jonathan was thoroughly worn out. Tomorrow was sword training with Lucy again, and martial arts. Only time would tell what sort of thief Jonathan was going to become. read more

When Jonathan Meyers was six years old, he laboured for three hours over a birthday card for his father. On ther day, he presented it to his dad, who was sitting in an armchair – bloated, lethargic – and stood shyly while his dad inspected it. “Thanks, Johnny!” he said earnestly, then cast it into the fire blazing in front of him. Jonathan watched it burn. But he did not learn from this event, or from others – and still blindly adored his father. read more

Mercenary-The FlyFF Adventure Continues

Third day of my FlyFF adventure-and I’m a “merc”

Today I trained from 22% (at 14) to level 15 at the Wolf-things. They are fun. But then it was back to the town! Hoorah! For my job advancement.

It basically consisted of-giving some hard to get Twinklestones out (Already had due to notification from a nice member of my guild, a level 60 assist named MintMandy). Then I had to run all around the mountains and valleys of the whatever-the-place-is-called finding the River of Weeping, and such. Fun read more
