Royal Betrayal – 12

The guard that was carrying Night walked into through the halls of the palace, which seemed never ending. However, the guard was seemed unbothered by the length. His breathing was still steady, compared to the heavy, quick gasps for breath from Stars and Sam. They had problem keeping up with the guard. Throughout the whole travel to their destination, Stars sent out cursive messages everywhere.

“Keep your thoughts to yourself, maybe it’ll save you some energy.” Sam whispered to Stars, annoyed by the language.

<I must remember to work out my leg muscles when we get out of this. If we get out of this.> Stars grumbled, obviously unhappy.

“Such cynicism.”, commented Sam.

Finally, the guard arrived at their destination, the dining hall. Gold-stitched tapestries depicting battles from valiant warriors with various powerful creatures hung from the ceiling. The floor was made of the finest tile available to the world, magically sealed to prevent cracks and glow. Each tile was one of a different color, and the tiles were very small.

In the middle of the room was a long wooden table. Food piled high on the table, enough to feed all of Perion. The edges of the table were intricately carved with the faces of balrogs, drakes, and other creatures. None of them were the same.

At the end of the table farthest from the doorway, sat one person. The person was a gaunt male, with pale blue eyes that seemed like they were capable of seeing anything. He sat there quietly while Night took in the room. The guard walked over to the man.

“King Ashura, your son has finally returned.”, the guard said, kneeling over. The king sent him away. Night watched the guard disappear behind a golden curtain behind the king.

The king stood up and walked painfully slow over towards Night. Night still didn’t move. When the king finally reached Night, he picked him up with a hug, nearly stopping Night’s air flow.

Looking at Night’s mud-stained clothing, Ashara said “Go wash up, then we shall have dinner, and talk about where you have been”

After Night walked out of the washroom, he descended towards the dining room on the crystalline winding stairs. His father stood at the bottom, waiting, holding fresh clothes for him. He took the bathrobe off and applied his new clothes.

His father motioned for him to follow. He did.

They walked into the dining room, Ashura walked over to the corner of the table where he had been sitting before Night’s arrival. Night sat on his left side, seperated from his father by 2 chairs. A soft drift of wind passing through his legs told him that Sam and Stars had climbed under the table.

Ten servants walked over, each carrying food on platters made of diamond. Each platter heaped high with food. Ashura motioned for Night to begin the meal, and Night began to eat.

Night was not eating all the food he took, for he was shoving half of it down for Stars and Sam, who had come out of their Dark Sight, to eat.

Stars was munching on a turkey leg when he heard something. He saw nothing but the darkness of the table covered by thick tablecloth. Night and his father’s legs protruded, but other than that, He could see nothing. Quietly, as to not disturb Sam, he called his energy again, to search with his head. He sent tendrils of unfocused mana in all directions. No one could feel the energy, not even Night, who had a higher mastery of mental skills than he did.

The tendrils returned back to him, and he sensed another prescence, other than Night, Ashura, and Sam. Using Dark Sight, he slid out of the table from under Night’s chair and stood up, looking around. No one.

He sent his tendrils out again, and felt the person again. He was standing in the same place, not moving, but he had Dark Sight on as well.

He ducked under the table to Sam. She had finished, and was feeling around for Stars. He popped out of his Dark Sight, almost causing her to scream, had he not clamped his hand over her mouth.

<Someone else is here. Whoever that person is may or may not know that we are here. Either way, we are to remain in Dark Sight for as long as possible without coming out of it, then using the skill as soon as possible.>

He felt her move her head up and down, then his hands suddenly clasped thin air as she used Dark Sight. Satisfied, he used the skill again.

“Where have you been? I have had guards search the entire city for you!” Ashura exclaimed, annoyed.

“Sorry, dad, I wandered out, and got lost. I promise it won’t happen again.” Night replied blandly.

“Well, it seems like the time away have made you look more of a warrior.” the king observed, glancing at Night’s muscle that he had not had when he left.

“Perhaps I should try for the warrior advancement again.” Night spoke up, forcing enthusiasm into his voice.

They stopped talking completely, and ate in silence.

After eating, Night walked to his room. As he closed the door, he took out his reef claw and poked his finger. A droplet of blood popped out of the opening, and it fell onto the doorknob. The door magically locked itself, and now, only he could open it. Stars and Sam both appeared from thin air, out of their Dark Sight.

Night opened his mouth, but Stars cut him off. <Someone is watching us.>

Night let his open mouth drop in surprise, then closed it. He did what Stars did before, sending out tendrils of mana, but concentrating it to just the room he was in.

“Not here.” He replied.

<When we were eating.>

“Crap. We might’ve been discovered.”

<Whatever you plan on doing, you better do it fast, tonight, if possible.>

Night grumbled in response. He hated being rushed, but he had no choice.
