Map Ownership Issues?

Whenever I play on my warrior, I always encounter the problem of having to find a map to train in. About 50% (this varies from 0% to 100% depending on the time I play) of the time I enter a gollem temple map, I always encounter an instant “cc pls” despite there being only one lone person training inside. Note that gollem temple maps are quite big and can hold 2-3 people comfortably, but some people can be quite selfish in the hogging it all to themselves.

Now that I have hit lvl 60 and planning to whack zombie coolies, I am afraid that this problem will become much more elevated, possibly to the point where I, a lowly warrior with no 3rd job, will be ksed out of my own map. As such, I am actually considering staying in victoria and training on cargos.

Back to the issue at hand, is it actually legal for people to own maps? Most people reason that since they have the “first come first serve” rights, they are entitled to a certain map and others need their permission to make use of it. However, these people do need to take note that all maps in Maple Story belong to Wizet and thus should be considered as common property leased out to the players.

I think that a player who enters a map first does have some sort of authority over it (I mean, you gotta respect a person who is patient and skillful enough to hunt down a empty coolie map XD). However, he or she should have some moral obligation to share his or her map with other players, unless the map itself is small (I can’t think of any though).

If you seriously want to be self-centered and hog everything to yourself, then don’t play MMORPGs.

  1. To me, its legal. Someone attacking the monsters in the map is not legal. That calls for the KS wars~

Err, yeah. Someone will raid your map by just looking at your level. I will go for the Cargo option.

  2. The golem maps have like a 7 monster spawn. One person can eliminate the entire spawn before the next round comes. If there’s another person there, training wouldn’t even be worth it.

There’s nothing illegal about them saying it’s their map, but they can’t forceably kick you out. Essentially, on these “CC plz” maps if two people train there, the exp rate goes down. People expect you to cc, not because of any game rule, but out of courtesy for them.

  3. dude, think of it like this. you’re the first one to buy a house and then you bring you entire family out of it for one day. Does that mean someone else can just come in and take it and suddenly it’s theirs?

  4. Mm, you are correct in saying that a sufficiently high levled person may be able to clear the spawn fast enough, but it may be easier to have 2 players, one taking top while the other take the bottom, to increase efficiency. Furthermore, more people = faster kills = faster spawn (correct me if I am wrong), and partying does boost exp gain a little. Still, you are perfectly right in saying that everything boils down to courtesy.

  5. jeff4ey, in your scenario, you actually own the house. In Maple Story, you are merely “borrowing” the maps from Wizet. There is a vast difference. Note: I do not approve of map buying (call it an irrational fear of having to part with my mesos XD)

  6. Not even that. More like say going to the beach. You can use it, sure, but others also have a right to it.

  7. Yeah its basic courtesy for one to change channels when a map is occupied. But if there ARE really no available channels, you would have to resort to sharing maps. I really hate sharing maps though, sharing a grupin map with someone else kisses my dreams of levelling by the end of the day goodbye.

    yea, that’s right! ^_^

EDIT: i have no idea how that comment got there o_O

  9. In order to expand the conversation a bit to the factors that affect map sharing, rather than map owning (which the author seems to be against), I’d like to offer the following things to consider:

    – Size of map
    – Terrain of map
—- Effects movement and class effieiency
    —- Delays killing
    —- May block certain attacks
    —- May prevent mobbing/soloing monsters
    – Number of spawn spots
    —- Constant
    – Speed of spawn
—- Affected by number of monsters on the map
—- Changes if more than one type of monster is on the map
    – Number of players
    —- Min. 2 Max. 6
    —- Law of diminishing returns
—- Defensive pact against map invaders
    —- Lag
    – Level difference of players
    —- Exp sharing
    – Hits-to-kill of players
    – Mobbing ability
    – Kill efficiency
    —-Modified by
    ——- Attacking skills
    ——- Power-ups “buffs”
    ——- Movement skills
    – Laziness
    – Player buffs
    —- Notable party benefits
    ——- Heal
    ——- Bless
    ——- Holy Symbol
    ——- Meditation
    ——- Rage
    ——- Haste
    ——- Hyper Body

And last but certaintly not least:

    CC PLZ OR DEFM LOLOLOLOLOL

  10. o.O Thats quite a bit of factors there, Iepiat. But generally only a few of the maps in the whole of Maple Story are utilised for training (e.g. wild boars, evil eyes, gollem temple, zombies etc), so I believe only a few specific cases need to be considered. I might draft out another blog regarding this, but I am too tired and lazy to do it now.

Thanks to all for the comments
