Jasper Carson

Jasper Carson

Jasper Carson

There was not one moment in the following week where that name left it’s place in Alice’s brain. Despite her efforts, the only thing she could concentrate on was the intensity of his silver eyes, his alluring smile, his unruly dark hair. . .

She closed her eyes and tried to think of something else. Anything other than Jasper Carson.

Alice jumped at the sound of a knock at her door. Finally, a distraction!

“Allie, get out here! Aren‘t you hungry?” It was a voice Alice recognized. It belonged to Avery. Avery was Alice’s roommate at the academy and closest friend. “Hurryyyyy!”

“One sec, Ave!” she called as she rolled her eyes. Avery was never patient.

“Screw it, I’m comin` in!” Avery warned as she barged in.

Alice sat up on her bed. “Sheesh! You’ve really gotta work on your patience!” she shook her head in mock disappointment.

“Hunger knows no patience!” Avery declared as she darted to the lunchroom.

Alice and Avery sat down next to each other at the lunchroom.

Jasper Carson, Jasper Carson, Jasper Carson.. Alice’s thoughts couldn’t help but wander back..

“That Carson kid is looking at you,” Avery announced.

“What, no way!” Alice looked up to meet Jasper’s gaze from across the room, and regretted it almost instantly. He was tall but had a young looking face, and high cheekbones. His very dark hair had overgrown a bit, sweeping down over his forehead and just barely covering his intense silver eyes. Blood immediately rushed to her cheeks, making her look down to stare at her lunch as if it had suddenly grown fascinating.

“Are you blushing?” Avery asked in awe. “There’s something I’m missing, isn’t it? You like the Carson kid!” she teased.

“Nuh uh!” Alice replied as she tightened her dark identity around her forehead. Looking down at her place, Alice suddenly bolted from the table — Avery shortly following. Even with 20 minutes left until the end of lunch, Alice headed to class.

“Fine, be that way!” Avery called as Alice rushed away. A slight smile could be heard in her voice.

I walked around aimlessly, looking for a seat. There was only one, and it was beside Jasper Carson. I hesitated before reluctantly sitting down.

He turned to face me. “Alice Parker, is it?”

“Most of my friends call me Allie,” I tried to smile.

“Jasper Carson,” he smiled back and I blushed and quickly looked away.

When the class ended, he disappeared into the crowd of escaping maplers and dashed out into the hallway.

With an hour to spare before my next class, I went to train. I tightened my grip on my kandine as the yeti approached. I readied myself to attack, when suddenly, a lycanthrope appeared from the shadows. A small gasp escaped my lips as the lycan swiped at my face. I fell back, and everything faded to black.

I struggled, trying to open my eyes. I looked up at the angelic face of Jasper Carson. Was I dead? I didn’t care. If this was dying, I’ll take it! There I was, in his arms and he was unnaturally fast. Determination held his face and his eyes were looking straight ahead. The feeling was impossible to describe. Almost like flying. I wanted to ask where he was taking me, but when I raised my head, there was a stabbing pain in my back, so I laid back down and slipped into unconsciousness once again.

My eyes fluttered open, and everything was blurry for just a moment. Then my vision refocused on Jasper Carson.

“Oh!” a small sound escaped me.

One side of his mouth pulled up in a crooked smile. “You’re awake.” My mouth dropped open at the sound of his voice. It was velvet smooth.

“So it seems.” I winched as the pain shot through my body when I tried to sit up.

“Take it easy there, love.” Jasper said softly.

“What happened?”

“I found you at the training grounds. You were badly injured, so I brought you here.”

I was suddenly aware of my surroundings. It wasn’t familiar at all. “Where is ‘here’?”

Jaspers lips formed a grim line and the events of the day came back to me. “You carried me… You were running… so fast… how?” I asked.

I could see Jasper’s jaw tighten. “Allie…” he said softly. “Please stop remembering.”

“Huh?”

“Try to understand,” he whispered, as if I was going to bolt if he said something too loud.

“What is it?”

“I’m… I’m not human.”

I tipped my head to one side. “Not human? How is that? Is this… your world then?”

He sighed. “Your injuries were too severe for any human hospital, so I had to bring you here. All I could think was, not her, not now.”

“I hope this doesn’t sound rude, but what exactly are you?”

To my surprise, he let out a laugh. “I’m not exactly sure.”

“Do you mind me asking some more questions?”

“Not at all.”

“How old are you?”

“Seventeen,” he answered promptly.

“How long have you been seventeen?” I asked hesitantly.

“Quite a while,” Jasper chuckled.

I blinked. I‘ve gotta tell Avery! I thought to myself.

“Absolutely not,” he said.

“Huh?”

“Avery can’t know.”

“Oh wow!” I exclaimed. “How’d you do that? What other things can you do? Your kind… are there more of you?”

“Well, naturally, yes, but the mind reading thing — that’s just me.” he explained. “Freaks among those who are already freaks.” he added quietly.

“I see. Are there other people like you that I know?”

“I sure hope not. You see, Alice, people like me aren’t exactly what you’d call friendly. We… we’re predators, and humans are our intended prey. You’d be surprised how many killings we’re responsible for.”

“But you’re different, right?” I asked hesitantly.

“Yes, I suppose so,” he nodded slowly. “I’m not sure where we come from, but we’ve been genetically modified. I guess you could say it was an experiment gone wrong.” he laughed — a frustrated laugh.

I opened my mouth to ask another question, when Jasper put a finger over my lips and whispered, “All of us around here are friendly, so you have nothing to worry about. You’re perfectly safe, I’ll make sure of it.” he hesitated before speaking again. “But you can never trust us, Alice. I’m a monster.” he closed his eyes. “but for now, just get some rest.”

As I closed my eyes, I could feel his cold fingers brush my cheek.

JASPER CARSON.

I looked down at her serene, pale face, and brushed my fingers along her cheekbone but quickly pulled away. It was dangerous for me to get attached to her like this, and I was fully aware. But was I falling in love?

I quickly shook the thought out of my head. I’m not good for you Alice.

I studied her face for something to keep my thoughts from wondering back. I could have kept it up forever, since I eating and sleeping aren’t an issue for me.

“Jasper…” she mumbled.

Startled, I looked at her again, but she was sleeping.

“Jasper,” she opened her eyes and smiled warily.

“Alice…” I started hesitantly. “Do I… frighten you?”

“You only wish.” she grinned.

I frowned. She was really making it hard to keep my distance. “Let’s get you back before people start worrying.”

  1. Mmhm. I thought the transition to the ‘training’ was kinda skimpy, and maybe you could have added detail as to why the ‘new place’ is so unfamiliar to Alice, but eh. Pretty good.

    [edit] You people really should comment more. >>;
