Chapter 14: Something Revealed but Hidden

“Hey!” the steel-clad guard called out,” Let me help you!”

The guard came over and helped me lift my aching body, which was covered by drenched rags. Iron clinked as his hand extended and grabbed my raised, hot palm. He was clad in silver armor and on his head was placed a steel, round helmet, and a skillfully crafted spear was held by his side. His face was warm and kind, a welcoming one and a face that showed he was glad to help out a fatigued traveler.

As I stood there, soaked, the environment enclosed my vision. The location was dim and it was amazing how so many wondrous plants could successfully thrive in such a harsh place. There were platforms magically hovering in mid-air, stacked closely together to create an obstacle course, which served as a path down into the deeper parts. Scents of exotic flowers flowed smoothly into my nose and made the air taste sweet. This mystic section of Maple World suggested that it was independent from the destructive effects of outside factors, it seemed to exist through another source, magic. I was almost breathless from the beauty of the underground chamber.

Being lost for words, I was relieved when the silence was killed by the warrior,” Whoa, the weather must be horrible out there! Forgive me for not introducing myself, but I barely see any pass through these unpopulated lands. The name’s Igor. But, if I may ask, what are you doing coming all the way down here?”

“Well, actually I’m heading to find this guy by the name of ‘The Rememberer.’ To be honest though, I have no clue where I’m going.” I said, unintelligently.

Igor spoke up again,” Oh! You’re going to see the Rememberer, must be pretty important business your on. That guy doesn’t like to be disturbed, kind of ironic really, lots of folks that need help and he doesn’t like to be bothered by plaguing questions. I be thinking though, that they would send someone, ehhhh, with a little more experience, but its not my place to interfere. It’s my job to help people that are lost, like you, find their way. So follow me to reach your destination.”

“Thanks much!” I responded with an exclamation of joy sounding through my voice. Finally, I can rest knowing that I am in safety. But I should still keep my guards up. This place, indeed, seems enchanted but something makes me feel like there is great presence or something buried in this dungeon. Strange. I’m probably just making it up! Haha! I thought, a faint, inaudible chuckle coming from my mouth.

“Watch your step, one false move and you could fall. We’ll just be heading downward….,” a muffled blare, from a distance, immediately made a noise in the cavern, cutting off Igor’s words,” Damn thunder, must have caused a rockslide or some other catastrophe.”

Suddenly, the beat of the rain, outside, mixed in with ringing clashes and our platform started quaking and sending a vibration crawling through our human forms.

“Don’t worry that’s just some…,” his words were interrupted again as a rapid dropping of our stomachs initiated and the floating surface of green grass began a movement of free fall. I bent down a little, trying to keep perfectly balanced and keep my position occupying the land. A little stroke had emanated through me, but I had promptly gained focus again.

“Oh f***! What’s going on! Hang on we’re going to hit soon!” the bewildered escort advised, with a hint of trembling in his voice .

The collapsing territory slammed roughly into the ground, causing a smash, blending into a combination of earth. Chunks of dirt sprayed into the air and dust puffed out and fled into the breeze, making a cloud-shape. There was a sound of collision that transmitted into the wind and then the land seemed to stand motionless again.

“Whew, we live! That was quite boggling,” commented the soldier, eased by the ending of the speeding descent.

His words were spoken a bit too soon, as the side hanging above air started to tilt slightly, but then its angle increased as the gravel surfaces began grinded against each other. Thrown off by the alteration of direction, I leaned forward to gain stability.

“Go, go, go!” I screamed, using enough expression to urge Igor forward. My feet flew over the ground, which was slanting to a greater overturn and threatening to throw us off, with blinding haste. My hands planted onto the back of Igor’s upper armor and pushed him along with a greater acceleration as both of us bounded of the end of the raised side.

Our bodies shifted through the air, and then we came hurtling back down and smacked into the ledge of the ground. I thumped down, on to two feet and one hand to make a safe landing, and then my other hand drew my sword out and I violently stuck the weapon into the cranny, which was formed already from the spectacular smash that had happened a little bit ago. My sword worked on getting the crack to split more apart.

The exasperated guard shrieked,” What are you doing!? You’ll make us fall to our deaths!”

With a clever remark, I wit-fully answered back in a calm tone,” You’ll see.”

Pulling my sword from its target, the platform quivered. The thousands of specks of dirt slid off, with great quickness, off of a wide section and sprinkled in a declining route, causing the link keeping the short length of ground up to become more insufficient and finally all of the specks, left their original position. The stage, not having support anymore, naturally fell through the air. The other passenger and I stayed on as best we could, bracing for the hit, that would signal the end of the path.

The expected event came soon enough, the terrain clashed onto the one below it. Then another drop, but at once the floor of earth beneath took the fierce tap. Our bodies became confused with the numerous repeating motion. Up and down, our heads rocked. It appeared as though the zones of gravel were stacked tightly together, causing a head-jolting impact every moment.

Overcoming the bumps, we sailed through the air once again and this time without any swift interruptions.

“Look,” Igor said, pointing a gloved finger,” that’s where we gotta reach to get to Sleepywood.”

“Oh crap! That looks like a dangerous jump to accomplish,”I worded.

“Jump!” repeated the flustered guard,” Nuh uh!” he said shaking his head, convincingly.”I’d rather try finding another and more cautious way.”

“Ok, suit yourself!” I replied, already having set myself and then I sprung off one leg, using the most energy I could summon. I left the rushing piece of land behind me, along with Igor, and drifted through the air. Gulp! Should have thought through this more before deciding on this dumb plan of action.

The ground made contact with my feet, and then a flattening roll swiped agilely through the grass. After landing, my figure couldn’t balance and the force pushed me to the ground. I sat there, breathing and swallowing the pain which was slowly starting to vanish.

After stepping into another portal, I caught my first glimpse of an underground city. It was a city of straw huts and where the light shone from lampposts, because there were no rays that beamed in from outside to cover it in a wave of light. Except for the spots with illuminated flashes, the outer edges where the light could not touch were dark dwellings. Right next to me, stood a structure of a magnificent gate, not really a gate but more like a door that was open to all.

Beautiful My lips mouthed without any evidence of sound. My eyes moved casually along the well-crafted design patterns on the gate-like entrance, it was covered with millions of intricate carvings. A person! Huh! Almost looks as he is hovering in mid-air.

“Exc-“ I started, but an abrupt interruption halted me. The eyes had come to life, with the eyelids snapping open lightning-quick, and they scrolled over to the source of commotion. His glance finally landed on me and he opened his mouth.

Words spilled out of it and were told through a soft and wise voice,” Something awoke me from my deep sleep, I sensed a feeling of a strange fright. Now I have glimpsed an image of you, but feelings are untruthful, most of the time.”

“Would you happen to know where the Rememberer can be found?” I asked, timidly.

His eyes stretched farther open, but he said, with no hint of surprise,” I am him.”

“Oh, I thought you would be tougher to find! Do you greet people into this town?” I commented, with an excited tone.

I noticed his clothes and the look of the man, he had white smudges drawn into shapes on his forehead and hanging from both of his ears were dangling, silver earrings. He wore straps of leather twisted around his ankle area and a brown, woven rag was draped over him.

His reply was plainly,”There are not much people to embrace, since barely any people want to visit. I meditate here. It is the perfect place for it, quiet and natural.”

Continuing the chat I asked,” What do you meditate about, it seems sort of dull just sitting around, thinking for a long time, doesn’t it?”

“Actually you have it wrong, there are many things that I ponder about and this world is full of so much mysteries that it would probably be impossible for one man to come up with the answers to all of them. I usually meditate about problems of people, the future of the world, and sometimes teddy bears, I have a soft spot for those cute and cuddly creatures!”the mysterious person responded.

“But enough about that rubbish, let’s get down to the point, I don’t usually make time to answer questions by dumb folks, but you seem to be an exception, I have a feeling. You must have come seeking me here for a reason, since you have dared to brave the dangers of the dungeon, am I correct in thinking so?”the Rememberer phrased.

Acting professionally, I started talking,” I was sent here by ‘Dances with Balrogs.’ He said you might know what step I should take next. He tried to give me the mark of the warrior so I could advance to the first job but something went wrong and the light passed right through me.”

“Oh, I see, and did this light affect you in anyway, any feeling pass through you?” the Rememberer inquired.

Answering the question, I resumed talking,“No, I just remember being pretty shocked, but it didn’t have anything to do with the light, it was just a feeling of bewilderment I felt because of the happenings.”

“Tell me, are you special in anyway. What I mean is, do you have any special abilities or maybe a secret?”the questioner verbalized.

Stopping and thinking for a bit of time, I made my thoughts sound into the air,” Well, I have been surrounded by odd events ever since I came to this world. Let me start out by saying, I just entered this civilization that exists and I haven’t been here very long. But ever since I got here everything and every one is out to get me for some reason.” I paused to let it all sink in and to see if the Rememberer would say anything.

He didn’t, so I moved on,” I have an ability to change channels, but this concept confuses me. All these dark creatures appear where ever I travel. But this is quite unusual, I think I have the power of controlling fire. It only lasted for a little while though, since it started pouring rain like hell out there. Also, a guy by the name of Zamrar, has shown me a prophecy he believes is mine. It perplexes me the most out of all the others. So, do you have any solutions or answers for me? I don’t know if it’s just me, but I don’t understand how to make sense of all these questions, they plague me night and day!”

A pause hung in the air for a time, but then the Rememberer’s voice piped up,“Whoa, that’s quite a speech, and a lot of problems, but, first, I must thank you, for you have given me some issues to contemplate. I’m sorry to say I do not have the answers to all these complications that have befallen upon you, but I can certainly help you along the way to finding some answers. Addressing the channel changing, I can do it too, and other experienced people also have the skill. All you do is think about the same place and chant it in your mind. You must be thinking, if all you have to do is that then ‘why can’t everyone else do it.’ That’s because there is a special magic that floats in your mind allowing you to snatch up your body and teleport it through dimensions. Even though you can escape many dangers, know this, a chaos that affects the world’s future cannot be eluded with that magic. Can you interpret all that?”

“Most of it,” a casual remark sprung through my mouth.

“Fire, you say and I understand that you most probably can also wield a sword?”the hovering figures asks, quizzically.

I nod my head violently back and forth in full agreement.

“Hmm, this is a stumper, maybe I should try something,” he mumbles to himself,” Ok, I’m just going to try something, it could work or maybe not. I shall give you the mark of a mage. It seems as though your fire skill could be magical.”

Slightly different sounds, that formed unfamiliar words, were recited by the Rememberer. They were similar to ‘Dances with Balrog’s’ mutters, but a difference could be distinguised. His arms united and a light, appearing from nowhere, was created in the meditator’s hands. This glimmer glowed, with a different color, than the one that I had experienced, in a way, before. The light was released, and a beam of red shot from the volume of air it had developed from. My eyes automatically closed, because naturally one does not like to see himself willingly get struck by magic. No feeling, just an airy breeze flew through me. This light had also failed.

“There is. . . a poss-, yes, a small possibility that you could be destined for another job, you could be a founder of a new class. But most likely, I wouldn’t count on it. There are sometimes jobs from ancient times, that keep themselves clung on to hygiene of a family, and suddenly show up in a person that is experimental enough. I say you should explore more and learn which abilities you can manage to conjure.” the Rememberer spoke, with pauses of thought.

“As for the dark creatures, I do not have a single clue on that subject. It could be a new evil emerging in the world. My guess, for the reason to being tracked by those wild creatures, is it might have something to do with the prophecy. You must be very special, if Zamrar has shown you the prophecy, or you have the most excellent persuasive skills in the whole world. He has never even read a line of it to anybody. But he has spoken about it enough times, so I can come up with some points it has to deal with. You or the heir of one of the families, it deals with, must resurrect their ancient family founder, which holds devastating powers to decide Maple world’s fate, something along those lines?”the Rememberer asked, as though he himself did not know.

I tried replying with a sure answer but my mouth made words flow uncontrollably out of my mouth,” Yes, I guess, at the time the whole thing was unclear but I remember something about two families.”

“Two?!” he suddenly reacted, in a very alarming matter,” That identifies a whole lot more and adds to my knowledge of this curious tale of prophecy. If there are two families, that means there could be another heir out there, but it is a prophecy and there is not much concrete proof that you are one of them.”

“Excuse me, hate to interrupt, but actually in one of the requirements of being one of the heirs is that the person shall double level. And people have acknowledged that they saw a different color flash radiate through me, when I advanced to another level,” I added.

“Yes, but no one has actually has seen another person commit that deed of double leveling, I’m saying that it could have been a different color for another purpose. I’ll tell you what you must do, from my vast intelligence I have come to the conclusion that one must be summoned to fulfill the prophecy. In history, many monsters have been summoned and have risen from the dead. But this is a resurrection of greater proportions. For this ritual to be carried out, you must come to acquire nine items that contain great magic. Why nine? To the knowledge of scholars today, there are nine objects that hold unbelievable power and keep Maple island from turning into a planet of great disorder. It was told that the great, powerful hero of righteousness from the prophecy placed nine items sealed with magic in the three main continents of Maple, to try to repel the force of evil from rushing back too rapidly and to keep the spirit of darkness completely destroying Maple World. One fact that Zamrar has admitted to, is that evil shall destroy the world, in time, if nothing is done. Do you understand the major importance of this? You shall gather up to nine items which hold great amounts of powerful enchantment,”announced the Remember, creating a whole speech, almost.

With a slightly confused look on my face, I responded as best I could,” So, I got to get nine items, but how do I know if they are the right items?”

Out of my pocket, I presented, to the Rememberer, the necklace and the orb I had found.

“Are these two of the items?” I awkwardly suggested.

“Let me see those, if I may.” he commanded with a polite attitude.

There was an exchange of the items, and I handed the valuables over to the Rememberer. He eyed the dimly sparkling necklace with lots of focus implanted on it.

“This chain of jewels does certainly look like it could hold that much power and it already weighs heavy with the magic trapped within it. And this orb, no doubt, that this is one of the necessary items. Did you meet up with the Shadowlord, because it is remarkable that you were able to come into the ownership of this so hastily. This would have been one of the hardest to obtain, is my assumption. Now the rest will probably be a piece of cake for you!” affirmed the intelligent person.

“So where should I journey to next? My picture of the map of the world is blank in my mind.” I mentioned.

“Hold on, lets answer your first question. About knowing if something is one of the spellbound containers of great magical powers, you will just plainly know if it is because of the energy that mystifies the air around it. Also I believe that more pandemonium shall unfold around you as you gather more of the objects of miraculous abilities. Now, I would advise to proceed on to Orbis and ask to find a fortune teller by the name of Spiruna. She should know more about tales of old and magic than me.” put forth the Rememberer.

Spiruna? Where have I heard that name before. I think I remember that name for some reason. This prophecy is daring and suicidal. I laugh at the people who think I am their savior. I must find out more about myself, and maybe this quest of epic proportions shall uncover the answers I seek to discover.

“Hurry on to the continent of Orbis, the evil that slowly grows is becoming clearer and more obvious everyday. You must not stall in your mission!”stated the old and wise man.

Stupefying the conversation I added,” One question though, how do I get there? I can’t go back the way I came and I don’t seem to know any other way out of here.”

“You ruined the path to Sleepywood!? An amazing deed to have done, but also horrible. It symbolizes the great potential you have. Well, I’m considering, No, should I? It’s dangerous!” the Remembered argued with himself, going off of subject for a short length of time.

Finally he resolved to tell me,”Alright, this is a secret path where not many have dared to walk through. A horrible path to be left to take, but I’m afraid you must! If you go farther on, you will see a platform that has two trees side by side. They are hardly separated, but there is a narrow opening which you can slip through and what lies ahead, after you make it past the path, is the grand city of Ellinia, located astoundingly in the tree tops. I wish you good luck and bid you farewell! You are one of the last hopes we have! So watch yourself.”

I graciously thanked him for his advice and left to continue to my next destination. My brain was full with new information because of the confrontation I had just had the privilege to stay through. I only hope that I can, if not then the most important objective of the world is failed. I wonder, why I, a pretty dense person, have been entrusted with this glorious duty
