A Luminary Sojourn

(This is a blog about Luminary. There really needs to be an ‘Other’ option added into the list of games. . . )

ANYWAY!

I downloaded this game, thinking, “Hey! Maybe this one can be good!”

So, I started downloading. I started browsing the forums for game info and learned this:

It’s like RS but better.

Which makes me wonder because that’s not hard to be better than. I’ve seen flash games better than RS. Paint Drying was a better MMO than RS. I have a poster that’s more fun than RS. RS is the standard and proof that you don’t have to have a lot to make even a BAD MMORPG.

But that’s beside the point. I still downloaded it because it wasn’t browser based and it HAD to be better for 600M+ MB.

I started the game up and noticed two things. It’s quite bland. You get a prepubescent boy, a hippie emo, a bimbo, and Little Red Riding Hood. You don’t get to customize their face, eyes, or anything for that matter. But that’s ok. I can live with that.

Second thing I noticed is the mentors. This is a GREAT feature to the game and I would recommend ALL MMORPGs have this. It’s basically where high level players that answer any and all questions for newbies. This helps A LOT. I cannot express how great of a system this is.

Except for the part you feel like you are being annoying/noobish.

“What’s +5Gun mean?”
“How do you add to Dex and Luck?”
“Are there any set classes? Or do you just get a weapon and use it?”

Still, this guy was really friendly and helped a lot. Otherwise I would have no idea what to do.

Anyway, the weapons are pretty neat. You get to choose from sword, spear, axe, cane, gun, and bow. Yes. A gun. That’s what I use, because you never bring a melee weapon to a gun fight. And I’m making it a gunfight. Watch out for your heads! LAMMY’S GOT A GUN! RUN! SAVE YOURSELVES.

The best part about the weapons is that there is no set CLASS. Now, I put emphasis on class because your weapon basically defines your class. Simply because every person gets a set of armour depending on the level, not the preferred weapon or style of fighting. Which is lame. I get to look just as cool as everyone else my level. Which isn’t at that point.

I can’t wait to wear a box for a helmet though.

I kid you not.

A box.

A ****ing wooden box.

It even has a peace sign on the back.

I swear, that is so lame it’s not even funny.

The rest of the game is VERY open-ended. You can make weapons, fish, cook, fight, or whatever you want to do at the time. It doesn’t matter. In this game, you actually have health. You have to eat to keep right and you have medicines in case you get a nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, and diarrhea.

If only there was Pepto Bismal in Luminary.

What’s a bit fun is to act like you are macroing. If you do, a gigantic dragon spawns on you named the monster it thinks you are macroing. Which is pretty funny.

Especially if your mad chicken looks nothing like a chicken. But it does look pissed.

What’s especially fun is- IS THAT DRACULA? -Hide.-

I didn’t know they came out now. Let’s get closer, maybe we can get a screen shot. OH SHI- SHH SHH SHH. . . . Wow. . . Ok, hold on. . . RUN RUN!

Wow, that was close. Who new his legs were a large group of bats, eh? He looks kinda British. Did you see his hands? Wow. We know what he’s doing in this area, eh? Eh? Heh heh. . .

The monsters are quite fun, but need a bit more variety. Some are totally unoriginal (Dracula, boar, blue lobster, Pikachu) while some are very unique (flying clams. . . . Umm. . . Yeah. . . )

The inventory is freakishly small. You will never have enough room for anything. You will be going to town more to clear out your inventory rather than actually restock. Not to mention it’s really hard to drop an item because half of the time it’s IMPOSSIBLE simply because it won’t drop the item.

This brings up another point, the towns are WAY underdeveloped. The main town (Hanyang) is the one you will be using the most. The only real reason you will be using the tons upon tons of other towns is simply because it’s either the closest and you died or you need to use the market or bank.

Not to mention ALL the towns look the same with the exception of Hanyang, and they all lack some important things. There is no general shop, only the market. Now, if you need something sold that doesn’t have a lot of demand, you will have to go all the way to Hanyang. If you want to use the market to clear it out, you must have a lot of patience because you can only have a mere four items in the market at a time.

It’s a great way to make money, too. I recommend it for all MMORPGs, as well. Especially because it prevents having to have the game on while you aren’t playing just to get something sold. Not only this, but it helps cut down on lag, stimulates the economy, and lets players find good deals.

This game basically has an in-game encyclopedia. I kid you not. It’s helpful because instead of having to go to a site to figure out what drops what at what rate, you can simply look it up on the game itself. Grand feature. There is no telling how many times I’ve used it simply because the map itself is huge. It would take a long time to run from corner to corner.

The game is a lot more realistic in that the monsters don’t drop the games currency (Marble). Instead, it drops certain items that you can either use to make something else (weapon, food, medicine) or simply be sold to people who want to make something. It’s very good and can even save you the trouble of finding someone that sells it when you can just make it yourself.

The only bad thing about this is that no matter what it is, as long as you have the materials, it is made perfectly. Getting the materials might be hard, but I can make it perfectly. I hope this will be worked out soon, however.

This game still needs a LOT of work, still. The font in game is hard as hell to read. I thought ‘clay’ was ‘day’ for twenty minutes. And sometimes you just can’t read it period. There is plenty of pauses and that funky square in random places. Things are way too organized to seem real and, as I said before, all towns look exactly the same.

I think the game shows a lot of promise, though. It just needs a lot of work.

  1. Interesting. Especially the box.

And I read ‘I thought ‘day’ was ‘day’ for twenty minutes’, and spent a heartbeat or two thinking how it demonstrated a bad font.

  2. No, no. C lay and Day. The c and l mended together and you couldn’t tell what was what. That’s only one example. Reading what the NPCs say is a chore is a quest within itself.

  3. I know, Lammy, it’s just that it’s way past midnight, and my eyesight at this point in time isn’t very sharp, not to mention my wits.

    Nope.

As for Pierules, they are presented by ijji. Luminary is a MMORPG where Gunbound is just an MMO Action/Shooter.

Oh. Woops. I was sleepy and wasn’t thinking straight as well. I thought I made a typo.

Oh, by all means, go ahead later.
