the issue of “illiteracy”

All right guys, I’ve heard enough of this issue all over mmotales and ms, and I’m gonna try my best to put a stop to it. The issue is that people are calling other people that use abbreviations on the internet (eg. omg, lol, brb, g2g, r, u,y) illiterate. I personally think that this is downright stupid, I’ve even heard of people refusing to allow someone into their guild because they refuse to right correct grammar on an ONLINE GAME! I know that a guild is something that you can set you limitations to, but to exclude a perfectly decent, legit person because they abbreviate things, that’s one of the stupidest things that I’ve ever heard. I mean seriously you guys, do you really think that someone is illiterate because they type “g2g” instead of “I gotta go”, obviously if someone were actually illiterate, they would not be able to recognize simple letters or read them, thus disabling them to play online games. Now, if you guys out there who do think this, than I would be considered illiterate to you, because I, like most of the maple population, use these abbreviations, and I take no shame in that. And to those of you who do right full sentences with correct spelling and punctuation, that is your choice, but your really just wasting you time. So please, don’t go around calling people illiterate because they like to save a little time,

p.s. If you see someone typing totally irrelevant things, like “gjljgjgosjogjohjjoklfnojo” then and only then they may be illiterate

~yoon~ (im gonna do this after every blog now)

    Correction. BASILMARKET. >_>

  2. i type kinda like this in game n’ stuff

    i just don’t capitalize all the time and i used abbreviations and there’s the occasional spelling mistake

    But here I try to be as literate as I can; grammar and punctuation count too.

  3. Well I may not have perfect grammar but I like it when other people at least try to have it.
    I do my best and some times I screw up with it and I am saying this as a warning to you all.

    Dont make me write a rant blog!

  4. I don’t call people “Illiterate” whatsoever. At all.

    Just because I type the way I do, and try to make it so it’s a bit easier to read (atleast, I think it is), Doesn’t mean that it gives me the right to call people illiterate.

    Just that literate people are cool.

    I hope not. o.o

    And to this blog, in MapleStory, I don’t call anyone illiterate, ESPECIALLY because someone said g2g, brb, etc. because that’s stupid and I use brb as well.

    If I can’t read the text, I would just politely tell the person my eyes burn from communicating with him/her.

  6. That’s because on MMOTales, overusage of those abbreviations are frowned upon

    There’s a reason for this as well

    Because in order to read your blogs people need to understand it

    this “rule” radiates to every form of communicating on MMOT and that’s why we have such strict posting rules

    In addition, it’s what separates us from the BasilMarketers

    You don’t have to have perfect grammar (i don’t use periods)

    You don’t have to be smart

    as long as you type correctly and arent an asshat we’ll pretty much love you

    and it’s a stereotype that idiots only type badly

    it’s not true but widely believed

    in the end it’s just better to type fully =/

    EDIT: for the record i use BRB, AFK, G2G and such

  7. Ahaha. I agree with you =). And for some reason, this blog TOTALLY made me think of how I first started blogging. As seen here. I don’t think I was illiterate. I just had some punctuation problems…some crazy ones. ^^;

    Anyway, my blog actually doesn’t relate to your blog at all, so ignore it completely for I forgot my purpose of bringing it up in the first place. [Since I wrote the comment halfway and then went to get the door and came back to have forgotten]. D;

    Umm, but good job! And I use some abbreviations and acronyms all the time! =) But it doesn’t really matter as long as you are understood. Just don’t type/write like that at school ;D. [But I admit dat wen ppl typ lyk dis, it hrts mai eyezz]

    Hmm. would that kind of typing be considered illiterate? I mean, we know what they’re saying–but they just purposely type like that because they think they’re so…ghetto or whatever. Just a thought XD.

  8. True . But not too much . It IS allowed here . It’ll just prevent you from getting the likes form your I-love-grammar-audience ;]

  9. its unly if on3 tpyez as bad az tis den its cllede illiterate.

    Or if it’s just plain out hard to read. I mean plz is already pushing it for me. piz/pis/pilz etc just cross the line.

  10. XD
    I haven’t changed my way of blogging, or typing in-game, much since the beginning. ^^;

    And since I play in MSEA, it is not point AT ALL to even think about what is illiteracy or not; if I were to be anal about it, I’ll have to stop talking to perhaps 95% of the SEA population.

    But I suppose I can consider myself to have gone to new depths of illiteracy vis-a-vis interactions with my fellow MSEA-ers. I feel more comfortable /being/ illiterate, lulz, which is really funny seeing how I am still the self-same Grammar and Spelling Nazi when I still put my mind to it. >D
