MapleSAP Special: Justice Arrow(15)

MapleSAP Special: Justice Arrow
Part 15: Returning Home

It was two a.m, and the furious blizzard blew through Henesys.
Maria ran as fast as she could through the blinding storm. Snowflakes hit her full force in the face. it was so cold, and the flakes were so sharp, they started making cuts in her skin. Hurt like hell.
She ran for all she was worth. Then as she passed the next corner, a huge arm reached out of nowhere and grabbed her!
Maria screamed as she was yanked back behind the corner. A cold hand clamped tightly on her mouth.
“Easy, Maria! It’s me!” Ross’ voice echoed.
Maria froze in surprise. She was so sure it was a Ranger who grabbed her.
She buried her face on him and cried at the mix of relief and dissipating panic.
“Cmon! Snap out of it, kid! We gotta get out of here! Rannbo, let’s go!”

We weren’t the only ones to escape Henesys that night.
Several noobs, and children snuck out and made their way through the streets. In this blizzard, visibility is reduced to mere inches. Unfortunately, many went the wrong way or blindly ran into patrolling JA men.

We got out of the town and headed north on the main road into the fields, then we cut through the fields. The winds are faster and colder out here, and everyone of us was frozen. We trudged slowly through the two feet of snow on the ground.
Explosions of arrow bombs and the sounds of bells echo above the winds.
As we crossed the next road, the air around us lit up and we heard bowmen shouting, and arrows being fired point blank at the groups of servents. Some were hit and fell; and there was nothing we could do for them.
Even though the truck was less than 15 feet away, we escaped into the next field, hidden by the snow and wind.
After what seemed like hours, we reached the forest and ran in. I looked back and as a patch of clear air passed over the area around us, I saw the ground littered with bodies of those killed by arrow rain attacks.
Along with the other lucky 100 noobs or less, we escaped into the forest.
Spared and hidden from the Justice Arrow by the trees, we were exposed to far nastier weather;
The trees caught the wind, and the air rebounded off of them several times, picking up speed with each hit and stirring up the snow on the ground. We were forced to march through this hell.

The next morning the weather clears up. It’s 12:30 and after nine hours of walking through the stiff cold, we came back to Victoria Road, about 15 miles west of the Justice Arrow’s west checkpoint.
We aren’t the only ones to make it. Several other groups of freezing people emerge from the trees like zombies and stand in a daze on the shoulder of the road. Some of them pointed out their thumb at passing drivers, others simply stood there frozen. Two people succomb to the cold and hit the ground.
Waiting for a ride was perhaps the most dangerous part of the journey. Justice Arrow trucks drive on this road, and they’ll be looking for the refugees.
As one truck approached, the group of people that were with us waved their arms in the air frantically, begging the truck to pull over.
“Get back!” I shouted to Maria and Rannbo. I pull them both back off the side of the road and behind the snow covered trees.
As the truck stops, the Justice Arrow’s men jump out, bows up and they open fire on the people. Those not killed were dragged and thrown in the back of the truck.

Eventually, the bus I was supposed to be on passes us with no regard. MapleTransit has strict instructions that the drivers not pick up hitchikers around Henesys.

An hour later we were picked up by a truck on its way to Lith. The driver and his friend lifted each of us into the back for the six hour ride to Lith Harbor.
When we got to Lith, we boarded another truck for Kerning City. We were shielded from the rain and snow by the canopy.

Two days later, we arrived in Kerning City, and made our way back to 7ung-Hwang, where the people are most eager to assist refugees from Henesys. We were dropped off in front of an apartment building where the people eagerly took us in. We were checked for injuries, given a chance to bathe and fed.
We stayed here for three days recuperating from the journey from Henesys. Maria got severe lag sickness and was hardly conscious when the SEA Landers living here took her to their home.

Despite their hateful sentiment towards Victorian Maplers, Permanoobs and Azns have a generous policy when it comes to helping others in need, especially escaped slaves from Henesys. Even though the JA targets these areas, the people will not hesitate to aid those who escaped from the grasp of the JA.

We were housed for three days in separate apartment units and allowed to visit eachother. Out of concern for our health and safety, we weren’t allowed to leave the building. We all got lag sickness, but Maria had the worst of it.
A doctor from a nearby pharmacy gave her some herbs. When Maria woke, she moved and talked very slowly. These are the symptoms of lag sickness.
A week later, my search of the area for Hank turned up nothing, confirming my worry that he didn’t make it.

We returned to the MapleSAP office and turned in our work, and so began the intense task of putting everything together. The other people working here were suprised and ecstatic of our return. It turns out they submitted a missing person’s report to the GM in early November.

Even the media are not invincible against the rigid policies and attitudes of the Justice Arrow and the people they govern. Many groups who went into Henesys never had the fortune of completing their assignments. As a result many newspapers, radio and TV stations refuse to send in journalist. Even MapleGeographic, the famous magazine that has documented practically everything since their founding in 1945, refuses to send people to Henesys. The last successful
article done on Henesys before KLON’s documentary was the Valley Times newspaper back in 1981.
We, however did not return unscathed. Scars line our faces, necks and hands because of the snow. Rannbo and Maria both caught lag sickness; Maria came down with the very serious third degree lag; the kind that can kill you if left untreated. Maria fought it and recovered, but the battle with the virus left her immune system weak and spent, and it may take her a year or more to fully recover.
Hank hasnt been seen since. His name is on the GM’s missing persons’ list.

Our lives were affected by the assignment. Without name tags, Maria and Rannbo are at greater risk. Both had their name tags taken away in Henesys, and without them, they can not seek medical attention if necessary. They can’t apply for new jobs, nor go to school. The penalty for losing your name tag is anywhere between stiff fines to jail time. Having the tag replaced is a minimum 1,3 mil, and the wait time for the application to be processed and the new tag delivered is at least 6 months.
If anything were to happen to them, nobody would notice. As a result, Maria and Rannbo lost their jobs with MapleSAP due to a law the permits crippling fines against any agency for having people without tags working for them.

Today, they live in the French River Permanoob burb. in exchange for room and board, they work for the many shops open down there.
As for me, I also had to leave MapleSAP following the series of vandalism incidents and property damage done in response to the report when it was published in several newspapers in the city.
I live under the city;s witness protection program now because the Justice Arrow and their supporters have targeted me. They put out a bounty of 5 billion mesos on me.

Kidnappings of children, magicians and noobs; terror acts against magicians and SEA Landers. The Justice Arrow has preached the doctorine of protecting and raising the young and guiding the others towards the light since the beginning of time. These crimes must be their way of showing it.

Henesys annual 2.2 trillion meso economy would only be a third of what it is without the JA’s magician traffiking business.
They impose their manianical religious and moral policies on those visitors, jornalists and slaves who they force into living there.
Henesys history records were wiped clean of all the dirty deeds the Justice Arrow to prevent dissent and distrust from brewing within.

Because of Henesys’ status of 3rd tier indepence, the GM has no authority and is at risk himself if he dares to inform the federal government.

Violence and abuse are carried out against the youngsters and others every day and they sustain serious injuries regardless whether they grew up in Henesys or not.

And all of it is covered by the impression of harmony the JA has laid over the town they intend to expand. In the future, the JA seeks to increase the population and the number of their own troops. And as they are in the preparations to wage their holy crusade against the rest of us, they are totally unchallenged by the GMs and Maple Peace Corps as they are fully occupied with the war in El Nath.

As time passes, and the country’s most notorius terrorist organization is making progress of expansion and development, Victoria faces a very uncertain future.

You have been fully informed about the Justice Arrow and Henesys. Do what you what you have the power to do.
