Oi, Curse Filter.

(Disclaimer: Reader’s Discretion is Mandatory.
I don’t want people coming after me to phlame me for posting inappropriate material. I don’t think there’s much to phlame in there, anyway. I just want to make a point that I believe the MMOtales community can handle maturely.)

Anyone remember the old days when your entire sentence gets blocked from being posted if it contains one Forbidden Word?

Yeah. I didn’t like that.

But I don’t like the new filtering system either. When you type in buddy chat, they don’t tell you what is censored and what isn’t, and you might end up having a conversation derail just because of that.

Then don’t use a swearword, you say. Isn’t it that simple?

No. Not if you play in SEA with tonnes of swearwords in at least four languages. Any random combination of vowels and consonants might chance you upon a swearword and then you get a **** and a screwed up sentence! Joy.

But haven’t they thought, that with all this silly filtering, we might actually pick up all those swearwords?

For example: so my friend and me were talking happily in the chatbar, and I was telling her, ‘I’m going to Lith Harbor.’
And she goes, ‘What? Going where?’
And I go, ‘To Lith’
And she goes, ‘What’s ** **th?’
And I go, ‘Oh. Damn filter.’

So now we know: Toli is banned. But why? Why is it banned? What bad, evil, thoroughly corrupt connotations does it have?!

So we go find out (all hail Google!), and corrupt our innocent little brains a bit more.

(But there is no corrupt meaning for ‘toli’. The only definition in the first ten pages of Google is this:
toli: n 1. A juicy piece of news or gossip. 2. The latest word or gossip. 3. The talk of the town, typically a salacious or risque tale of intrigue, corruption or foolishness. Like, huh?!)

There’s also:
Friend A: I hate all these feathers ac***ulating in my inventory.
Me: Say what?
Friend A: Ac***ulating?
Me: Oh. It’s censored.
Friend A: What is?
Me: see you am.
Friend A: What’s that?! Why is that bad?
Me: … You had to ask.

I didn’t explain in the end of course, but, you know… >.> Imagine the curious little minds of kiddos running off to actually try and discover what it means…

…As we did in the following MSN conversation, taken straight from the Chat Logs o’ the Silvar.
(Nenya is the name of my noobie crossbowgirl)

Friend B: i went on delph and made a sullen-looking char
Friend B: tried naming it eckwila_isphul
Friend B: ‘you cannot use this name’
Friend B: i tried without underscore, can’t either
Silver: LOL
Silver: there’s a swearword in there?
Friend B: really?
Silver: i bet
Silver: did I tell you?
Silver: nenya’s name gets censored?
Friend B: ?!
Friend B: wow.
Silver: if I go ‘haha’ on nenya
Silver: i get this
Silver: Ne***:*aha
Friend B: nyah?!
Friend B: what’s wrong with nyah
Silver: no idea
Friend B: lol
Friend B: *googles*
Silver: but it’s frigging amusing
Silver: i mean
Silver: come on!
Silver: i’m just a noobie xbow woman
Silver: why censor me?
Friend B: let’s see. any swearword that ends with n?
Friend B: starts, sorry
Friend B:
nyah:That annoying sound you hear when dorks (especially engineering majors at Georgia Tech)start talking about something nerdy.
Silver: LMAO
Friend B:
What Cartman on the show South Park always says in place of words like “here” and “now”.
“You can stay over nyah, but I’m going over nyah.”
“Yay, I shall answer the phone nyah.”
Silver: >.>
Silver: still nothing to be censored!
Friend B:
nyah 1 up, 12 down
1. Sexual intercourse – you know what that is don’t you? Yes, yes you all do o.O
“go nyah urself!”
“i hate nyah’ing in front of my mom”
“nyah! nyah!”
Friend B: found it
Silver: o_O
Silver: this is so obscure!
Friend B: exactly -_-
Friend B: and thanks to maple
Friend B: we’re a little less innocent

And thus, I rest my case. XD
(And no, captain, I didn’t mean to corrupt the innocent little minds of kiddos around here, I really didn’t. REALLY.)

On other MMO thingos, SilverFx the FlyFF Vagrant is finally a two-digit level (EXTRAORDINARY ELEVEN, YES!) and SilverFx the Maplestory Awesomeful Huntress is still 66. I think I might blog about the FlyFF SilverFx soon.

Cookies~ I want almond choco chips today. 😛

[Edit] I’m not the only one that thinks this way. XD link

  1. I hate the curse filter.

It won’t let me talk all complicated-like at the people who warrant it.
Are you on FlyFF now? D:

  2. “Hey, what are you doing?”

    “I’m killing a yeti, you?”

You can’t have normal conversations anymore. :/ ’tis really pathetic. They should just pull out all the curse filters. I mean. If someone says something, you can black list them. 😀 Stupid GMs. +_+

  3. The wordfilter sux. . . sometimes i have to talk like this:

    (insert word)

    *enter*

    (insert word)

    *enter*

    (insert word)

    *enter*

And so on and on and on. . .

  4. Agreed. — So annoying, but I’d rather have that filter then how they block the whole sentence and don’t even tell you what’s wrong with it. xP

  5. Yea, they should just take the filters out. Seriously, people just find ways around them anyway! Like saying the “f” word with an apostrophe in the middle >.<

  6. Yes, yes, I remember that was how I learned a slang term for a female bodily part.

    Id**t fi*ter*.

  7. The FlyFF filter is great. Any word used at any time with censorship.

    But guess what?
    No one swears.

Its like how prohibition caused the mob to make more money.

  8. oh and about the name, maybe cuz its more than 12 letters, i dont play in maplesea so i wouldnt noe
i remember i couldnt say “selling last years pumpkin basket” or something like that and it got blocked

  9. Now that’s an interesting topic. I’ll have to keep that in mind when I start playing SEA.
