In which ‘Lost’ is used five times.

You know you have played too long at one game when you find yourself bereft of the ability to find your own way around in a totally new one.

And I mean it literally.

My last Maple experience blog talked of the Crashing of Aquila. Well, it’s back up, obviously. But that’s not the point of this blog, since it is a Flyff blog, after all.

(Ya. Flyff. Who knew that a Mapleholic like me would actually budge out of Maple? Who knew that my nice slow gastropoda of a computer would actually run a 3D game?

The Actual MSN convo copy-pasted below.
Me: I’m trying out flyff
Friend: it runs on your comp??
Me: …
Me: yes, it runs on my com. )

One week ago, egged on by Indescane and the overwhelming force of boredom, the almighty Silvar decided to gift the Mia server of Flyff the benevolent presence of one awesomeful SilverFx, to be introduced with much drumrolls and fanfare!

Well, at least that was the plan.

What really happened was that a noobie little Vagrant named SilverFx quietly spawned in the middle of a foreign town (Flaris was its name, she learnt later), right next to a sparkly fountain thing… and proceed to get quite lost in that very town.

Most words cannot explain nor describe the hilariousness, the helplessness, and the utterly directionless way in which things unfolded next. But ‘lots of randomly disappearing things’ should do the job.

A help screen, sort of interactive, popped up. Must be summoned by all that ‘lost noobie’-ness radiating out so strongly.

At first, I thought it would be helpful, why else is it called Help?, but it turned out otherwise. After it resolutely refused to continue to the next topics past ‘How to Move’, I clicked randomly, and it disappeared.

Next, fascinated by the row of colourful buttons at the bottom of the screen (‘Hotkeys!’, that I learnt later too), I hovered my pointer over the one named ‘Pick Up’, (all this time thinking: why is the pick up on f3, not like on END like in Maple…?), double-clicked…

…and it disappeared.

Common sense (and experience from Maple, of course) informed me right then that this button was, quote-unquote, ‘heckaluva important, why the hell you go delete that for!11?!’
So it was mild panic attack for a moment.

Then, my fingers did another little tapdance on the mouse over the ‘Sit Down’ button…

…and it disappeared too. Yahoo.

Attempts to restore the deleted buttons (‘Press M for motion list, pl0x,’ says the ingame Help file) only resulted in the discovery of every other keyboard shortcut BUT the correct one. I even managed to set off the spastic looking marching motion while randomly clicking around in the emoticons menu, much to my very tickled horror: Since when did muscle spasms become mode in MMORPGs?

But I still couldn’t recover my ‘Pick Up’ and ‘Sit Down’ buttons. Can we say ‘confused much’?

Time for Plan B then. I alt-tabbed to MSN, and beseeched help from the spiffarific Indescane. (henceforth referred to as Des):

Me: HALP
Des: Wah?
Me: I deleted some action buttons
Me: or whatever you call them
Des: …
Me: and I don’t know how to get them back
Me: *noobb*
Des: You mean the hotkeys?
Me: something like that
Des: LOL NOOB.
Des: *points and laughs and whatnots.*

In the end, with the godly little tidbit of advice of ‘Press O, it brings up the motion list, then just find the pickup button and put it back on F3’, I hurry from the Oracle of Des back to Flyff and restored my buttons. Yay.

The day ended, after Des kindly met up with lost little me ingame to guide me around. I started off on a quest and met some Aibats (I think that’s how you spell the name of those fat round things), my first targets-to-keel.

(‘Um, where are the Jr. Sentinels?’ ‘No Jr. Sentinels here, they just push you off into the deep end.’)

And more amusing was the random buffs I got from random Assists just by standing around feeling lost, of which the equivalent of Haste was the most fun of course. ^^; (*mutters* I think it’s called Haste too…) There was also the random ‘Merry Christmas!’ gift of 400 Penya (that’s the mesos in this game, my mind keeps telling me in its desperate Attempt to Familiarise Strange Situations) and a noobie helm from a random player. Nice welcome, no?

Well. In short: what an adventure. All the guides that I dug out while waiting for the client to download and patch could not have prepared me for this baffling feeling of being an actual know-nothing-at-all.

It’s not only the ‘eeh, I don’t know the names of all the pretty skills’ and ‘what the heck is Pxp for?’, but it’s also, ‘Holy. It’s 3D! :O’ I have yet to play a 3D game without getting seriously, seriously lost. Even Runescape made me dizzy.

Yes, I know I’m sad and sense-of-directionally-challenged. But I’ll live.

So since then, I’ve been popping in at random to bash some Aibats (sometimes my sister helps. ‘Ooo, lemme double-click!’) I’m still lvl 3 or 4, I can’t remember. XD Slow I am.

Haven’t really decided on a job to take, though I doubt I’ll get that far anyway. :X But the magicians sound spiffy. Especially the Elementers. The skills look cool and promise lotsa carnage in the early game to the shallow casual player AKA me.

Of course, lotsa carnage could also mean ‘get oneself killed many many times’.

But only 3% is lost every time you die, and it doesn’t seem as hard to level as Maple, and you can’t really accidentally die AFK-ing because the monsters so far aren’t argo ones, so they keep to themselves nicely until you hit on them… Hmm. Sounds sweet, no?

Still, Maple continues to have most of my obsessive soul, and if you know me well, you’ll know that I don’t give up on things easily. *coughs*Redemption*coughs* So if I get online time, I’ll most probably spend it on Maplestory anyway. There’s a still 3rd job advancement to be gotten. ^^

Cookies then, because you read this up till here. 😀

Maple-wise: SilverFx is at lvl 65, 65% But that’s a story for another blog… 😛

  1. I love the games in where you are so lost, once you get the hang of it, your a pro.

Maple. I got lost in Maple Island Pharmacy. 0_o
Runescape. Lumbridge vs. Al-Kharid. Hmm. AND ONLY 10 COINS! Lets try to kill a cow to get them!
    Heronline. Howl of what?
Audition was pretty straight forward, until I got to the 8-key part. You can dance diagonally?!

ANYways, all I’m saying is that video games rock. 😛

  2. Welcome to Flyff! I’m thinking of making a character in Mia to meet up with the MMOTers.

I remember my first intro into Flyff, lol. The sparkly fountain thing is called a lodestar (though I didn’t know it at the time) and I got lost in Flaris too. XD

Aggros, don’t worry, you’ll meet alot of them as you level in the game. In some places they spawn more too, which means more deaths. (x_x)

  3. i’m not ready to leave Maple yet

    i’m still into it

but if i ever do leave survival project will probably be next

  4. You can lose levels in FlyFF from dying.

And monsters will start becoming agressive at higher levels.

  5. FlyFF is really easy to get confused in the beginning.

And you start to feel like grabbing the penguin guy and giving him a good strangling.

I made a mrlumpy on Mia server.

The way I got my sense of direction in FlyFF was to rotate the camera so that the arrow pointed north, then did a 180 degree top view- fully zoomed out. Then refer to the world map. That way, the game becomes more 2Dish.

  6. Hahaha!

    You are slow!
I played for 5 months and got a level 60 BP!
If you want the account, give me a PM!

If I can remember the info.

  7. xD Well at least we’re in no danger of losing you to FlyFF, eh? *grumbles* You should all just play Mythwar and be done with it! >o!

  8. Ya, now I’m ‘hard-wired’ for MapleStory. Whenever I catch someone saying “lightning,” I think “hits6monsterswith60basedamage!” And the first time I tried playing FlyFF, I kept thinking the keys were set in the same way. In MapleStory, I’m less playing, and more reacting while I’m playing most of my attention to talking to my friends, in FlyFF, I’m like “, why isn’t this working? This is supposed to send me to the nearest town!” Then my friend tells me It takes 5 seconds to charge or something and I have to do nothing until I get to the town -_-.

Now I’ve typed too much but dont want to delete it. =(

  9. Only lvl4? That’s stunning. xD

Log on more often so I can drown you in free stuffs. 8D
Actually, I think the best thing I did in Flyff recently was to click somewhere for my character to go move in that direction and go to get myself some food. When I came back, my character hadn’t moved. She was repeatedly running in to a tree.

And Roisin, come to Mia. You know you want to. It calls your soul. You too, Lumps.

Off to FlyFF with me now. 😀

  10. going to play once ive got the admin privileges in my comp sorted out. . . imma gonna be a blade =D
