Nature’s Balance (1)

“The moon, the stars, the sun, they are all connected.” A man motions to the sky. “Nature is an everlasting cycle, never stopping. Things are created, they live, then they die. Everything happens naturally.” He pauses, and looks up to admire the night sky.

Beside him, a young teen sits. “If nature is so persistent, then why was our planet nearly destroyed eons ago?”

“That, my dear, was the Biological War of 2038.” The man sighs, reliving strong memories. “A time of chaos, when humanity had forgotten the balance of nature.”

“So we fought each other until the world was unlivable?” The girl’s eyes are alert, lapping up the information.

The man shakes his head. “I wish it was so simple, my dear. The truth could not be further.”

“Tell me, father, tell me the story.”

Standing up suddenly, the man picks up a rock and flings it across the small lake. It skips over the water and lands on the other side. He sits back down, eyes losing their focus. “Alas, I cannot shield you any longer, my daughter, for you are not the little girl I once knew.” He glazes at her with a solemn look. “Beware of the vulgarities and harshness of my tale, my dear, yet I do not wish to shield the truth from you any longer.”

And so he begins to speak.

“I was a young lad back then, full of hopes and dreams. Unfortunately, most of them were crushed by reality, for my family was but a poor bunch. Alas, I was a potion seller’s son, and had not been exposed to the wonders of that time. Back then, the world was vibrant, glowing with technology. As you may see in your history books now, it was known as the Technological Golden Age.” He closes his eyes, as if in a trance. “The world was changing so fast, and I was eager to join the ranks of this great age.”

“Before I could though, war had started. Now, we know it was a disagreement between Sorcerer Grendal and the “Dark Lord,” but back then, all we knew was that the magicians and thieves had declared war against each other. The archers, being allies with the magicians, supported their army. All archers above the age of forty were drafted.”

“My age…” The girl absentmindedly comments.

“Yes, my dear.” He smiles fondly at her, and then his eyes lose focus, one again living in the past. “Even though I was poor, and was the potion seller’s son, I was still trained to be an archer, a hunter to be specific. So I was, drafted into this horrible war. Of course, back then I thought this was a great adventure, and a chance to live my dreams.”

“The first few months were harsh, but my determination drove me to the ranks of the best the army had. Alas, I had finally earned my place to bunk with the best: Tracis the Cleric, Ester the Ice/Lightning magician and Rectoph the Crossbowman.” He blinks his eyes several times, as if trying to eradicate tears from his eyes.

“Didn’t they perish at the hands of the Dark Lord himself?” The girl asks softly.

“Yes, they did.” His voice grows softer. “They fought hard, but all was futile.” He shakes his head. “But that’s another story, my dear.”

Before them, the suns start to peep over the mountains of Perion. They both sit in silence, admiring nature’s wonders as the suns slowly creep up the sky. The mushrooms start to awake, the snails crawl out of their shells from a good night’s sleep. All around them, the beauty of the world awakes.

The man stands up. “The suns are rising, and we must get back. I shall continue next time, my dear.”

They walk home.

I was bored, okay? And I’m not stopping SoS, I just like to work on more than one thing.
