Friend?! Hacker?! ZOMG!

What would you do if. . . you found out your friend HACKED? What about if (s)he LIED about it? I need some opinions plocks.

I met this person about a week ago. (S)he was really nice, funny, and literate. The probability of that nowadays is probably around 1/200. Or more. I noticed that he (I’ll cut with the (s)he crap. It’s a guy.) leveled uber fast. Like, one or two levels a day. At 5x. I only know ONE other person that was legit and leveled that fast. That’s when a thought hit me like a flying, fat cow. Was he a hacker?

He was always at a certain training spot. I asked around and found that he was often on ALL night. Today, he said he was gonna go to sleep and let his friend train him. What, doesn’t his friend sleep? Even if he was telling the truth (he wasn’t), file-sharing is against the TOS anyway. The training area was in the Omega Sector, so I had to transfer a Warp Capsule to my pill-buying mule in Ludibrium. It’s only level 10, so I had tons of trouble getting to the map. Stupid flying aliens. Armed with 100 red pots and 2 white pots I found on the floor in the FM, I battled against the elements in a race for the truth. Cough. Anyways, when I got there, he was hacking. I kinda figured that before, but I had to get some solid proof anyway. I took lots and lots of screenies. I felt like a photographer. Only I took pictures of hacking friends instead of cute, furry animals.

Now the dilemma– should I report him? Oh, wait, I already did. Should I mass-report him? I doubt one report will get him banned. Should I kick him from the guild? I mean, my buddy list? Should I warn him to stop? Or maybe, blackmail him? Pfft, I’m not that mean. I dunno. Right now, I’m leaning towards heavily hinting him and hoping he’ll come clean about it. Well, that’s all for now. Please comment below on your preferred path of action. And some advice wouldn’t hurt either.

I know the right thing is to mass-report him, but I’d feel sorta bad. And mean. And like a betrayer. Even though it’s his fault anyway. I’m gonna sleep on this one.

  1. Hmm. . .
    Well. This could be a toughy for most people. MOST.
    For me, I dunno. I don’t think I’d do anything about it. *shrugs*
    And like you said, he was really nice and stuff, and plus it sounds like you befriended him. If that’s the case, I personally, wouldn’t care. After all, he’s your friend. And friendship is pretty important. So what if he hacks? That’s really his problem, and not yours.

    But then again, you reported him. So in that sense, you were already betraying him. So just go along with it.

    Uhm. I think I’m confusing myself now. O_O;;

    Okays! Basically! If I were you, I’d just care less about him being a hacker–just because I have hacker friends, and they do what they want. As long as he isn’t bothering, or hurting you in some way–who cares?

    The GMs will get around to it soon enough. In the meanwhile, let him have his fun. ^^;

    SORRY IF I OFFENDED ANYBODY! I didn’t mean to, honestly. =]

    He didn’t say anything. So how’s he lying?!

    And the way you type makes YOU look immature.

    And I agree with Aliyah

  4. I think you should talk to your new friend and let him know that you know he’s a hacker. Tell him that you don’t condone his actions but you think he’s a cool person anyway (because you do, don’t you? — at least that’s the impression I got from your blog) so you want to continue being mates. But don’t hide your true feelings about hackers. Then just let him decide what’s going to happen with your friendship. The ball’s in his court. After that, if you two decide to remain friends, that’s great because he seems like a nice person and nice, literate friends are always hard to come by.

    Oh, also I don’t think you should mass-report him. That seems like going after him with a vengeance, and you’ve already done your duty by reporting him once. Don’t feel bad about that, by the way; it was the right thing to do since he *was* hacking, after all. Anyway, it’s going to catch up to him eventually so just try to work out your friendship and see what happens. I don’t see any problem with having hackers for friends, just as long as they understand you aren’t a hacker and that you don’t approve of what they’re doing.

  5. :/ It’s his problem that he hacks, really. But if I were as troubled as you are about it, I would come clean and talk to him. I did that once, with a hacking friend, and he was all like, ‘Oh, but it’s nothing right? Just for fun only.’, and I left it at that. I still talk to that friend now.

    But the second part of that story of mine is that he got banned. Not once, not twice, but on all the characters that he hacked-leveled. So retribution and all that karma whatnot has a way of coming around, see. I will consider my part done as long as I made it clear that I don’t condone hacking and that I think he shouldn’t hack too.

    Hint first, then tell him directly. If he denies, leave it. No point spoiling a good ‘friendship’ over a game, no matter how short it has been?

    @icyx3: Your typing is far worse than this guy’s. >.>

  6. *cough* Shemales *cough*

    You use the wrong words, dude. Unless you friend is a. . .I’d better not say it.

    Just say ‘NO’, with authoritatively, like a mother denying her child ice cream. XP

    Ah! KARMA!

  7. As the others have said, I think you’ve done your part in reporting him once.

    As for the friendship, I’d say to hint at it, like you know that he hacks, and see if he comes clean. If not, it’s really up to you if you want to tell him you saw him hacking or not. From what you say, he seems like a pretty cool guy. I think as long as you don’t start hacking yourself, you two should remain friends.

    That’s just my two cents; hopefully it helped you a little. ^__^;

  8. I would tell him to quit hacking, and ask why he was hacking. Say you will mass report if he doesn’t quit — If he doesn’t, just do it. Hacking sucks.

  9. Well, my bestest friend is hacker. . . I think you should talk to him about it, Laura. Don’t threaten him with mass reports or something, it’ll make things worse.

  10. Same thing with me. My friend that I always trained with at Grupins turned hacker on me. I found out when we were partying at Pangs, I was typing and I died. I blamed him but he decided that he would train me. I let him and when I came back to my computer, there he was, hacking. I told him to quit, he refused, I removed him from my buddy list and everything. He got banned later.
