Monster – Chapter 2

Angry knocks sounded at my door, making my mother jump up.

“We know you’re in there!” a deep voice shouted.

Fear filled my mother’s eyes, as she hurried my 5-year-old body into a closet.

“If something happens, know that I love you, Alice. He will find a way,” she said as she closed the door and rushed down the stairs. Panic shook me. What was happening?

“NO!”

I woke with a start. My heart was racing and tears were streaming down my flushed cheeks. It wasn’t the first time I had had this nightmare since the actual event on my 5th birthday. It was the same every time, she didn’t come back. But this time, something was different. Instead of saying “God will save you,” my mother repeated “Jasper will find a way,” over and over.

What was my subconscious trying to tell me when Jasper had not spoken to me for the entire week since the lycan incident?

I jumped out of bed, and scribbled a note for Avery:

Ave,
Need to clear my head. Be back soon.
Allie.

Slipping into my uniform, I glanced at the clock. If I wanted to board the ship to Orbis in time, I’d have to hurry. I pulled on my dark identity and grabbed my kandine as I dashed out.

~~~
I boarded the ship with barely a minute to spare. I chose the most isolated seat and stared absent-mindedly out the window. There were some experienced maplers battling the wicked-minded beasts known as balrogs.
“Hello there, lovely,” a man sat down next to me, edging so close I could almost feel his breath on my throat.
I grimaced, and more than anything I wanted to reach out and punch him. Instead, I acted on my better conscience and got up to walk away.
“Leaving so soon?” he smirked, grabbing my wrist.
“Look here, buddy–” I started in my most menacing tone.
“She doesn’t want anything to do with you,” someone finished for me. My head shot up at the sound of the smooth musical voice. Jasper. Jasper will find a way
“How about you get lost?” the man hissed.
Jasper’s silver eyes were darker than usual and he glared at the man with such intense hatred that it made my insides flip uncontrollably. Just as he was about to raise his bow, a horn sounded the arrival of the boat at Orbis, and with that, Jasper grasped my hand and didn’t let go until we were out of earshot of everyone.
“Are you insane?” he asked, running his hand through his tousled hair.
“So you’ve decided to talk to me again?”
“That man was really testing my patience back there. The things he was thinking… You don’t know how hard it was to leave him there… alive,” he admitted.
I closed my eyes. “Why have you been ignoring me?”
Jasper let out a sigh. “ I’m not good for you, Alice.”
“What are you talking about?” I demanded.
“I’m dangerous, Alice. I’m…” he hesitated. “ I’m a monster.”
I winced at his choice of words.
“Don’t I frighten you at all? I mean–”
“Not one bit,” I said, cutting him off.
Jasper’s perfect features arranged into a frown. “You make this so hard to do.”
“So don’t. Stop worrying about me.”
“I only dream it was that easy. But I’m not the only threat posed against you. Since you know what I am, somebody might… come after you.”
I struggled to keep my expression composed. “I don’t care, Just promise me you’ll never push me away like that again.”
“Alright,” he sighed as he agreed reluctantly.
“One question, though. If I may?” I requested.
“Of course.”
“How did you know to come find me?”
Jasper grinned sheepishly. “You should have heard Avery’s thoughts wondering. One creative mind, that girl has. She thought you got kidnapped!”
“You were listening to her thoughts?” I asked in bewilderment.
“It was kind of hard not to.” Jasper smirked again. “People’s thoughts are pretty easy to block out, but Avery’s wild assumptions — it was like she was yelling them at me. And you… being the danger magnet you are, I thought you were in danger.”
“I left her a note.”
“I doubt she found it.” he frowned.
I thought back to where I put the note and slapped myself. I had put it in the one place Ave is never bothered to look. On top of her books.
Jasper had turned his head away from me, but I was sure that I saw one side of his mouth pull up into a crooked smile.
He will find a way.
  1. Sorry about double-posting, but I’m going to put my superbadawesomemegacharacter here.
    Name: Silicon Strenia
    Gender: Male
    Age: 17
    Side: Good, then turns evil.
    Appearance + Personality: He always has a smile upon his face, even when sad or happy. He’s extremely optimistic. He has long straight black hair that covers his eyes, that extends almost to his nose. He has a strong build, and always keeps his true power hidden. He doesn’t seek fights, and always looks for a peaceful decision. His attitude or appearance doesn’t change even when he’s evil.
    History: His father was murdered, and his mother abandoned him, but Silicon doesn’t like to talk about it. His history is kept a secret.
    Lul.
