The Hidden Sparrow – Prologue

Chapter 1 – link

The Hidden Sparrow
A bead of sweat slid down Kenji’s neck. He peered through the bushes to see a huge bonfire sizzling next to two thatched buildings. Quick as lightening, a shower of arrows and stars rained down onto the thatched buildings. A mysterious glow shivered in the gloomy night. Enraged people ran out of the building only to be killed by incoming sorcery, arrows or stars. As Kenji watched, stunned, feeling helplessness of not being able to help. He mindtouched with his companion, Alexei, who was a flyeye, telling him all he could gather from the destruction.

He was sure it was the Bloodhrëi. They always left their circular bloody symbol in the most obvious place ever: the floor. Kenji despised the Bloodhrëi. Years ago, they had slain his family. They lived like disobeying tenants, although much more powerful. From what Hidden Sparrow HQ knew of Bloodhrëi, Kenji knew that they consisted of multiple elemental mages, assassins and hunters. They always kept away from clerics, bandits and the warrior type.

Kenji quickly casted “shadow semblance”, which was the very new stealth technique he learnt after accomplishing his first job, as a thief. Kenji could use shadow semblance well, simply because it was structured so that after he used it, his shadow semblance, which was a virtual copy of himself, would run as guided by Kenji’s thoughts. This helped Kenji escape. The only downfall of this spell was it consumed a vast amount of energy.

As Kenji ran off into the shrubs, sorcery, arrows and stars rained down on the shadow, being pinned to the ground. Swiftly, Kenji reached into his pocket and took a sip of Sidhyl. With renewed energy, he ran off back to Hidden Sparrow HQ ready for his first adventure. As he ran on, he noticed a shadow gliding on besides him and every time he stopped, that shadow stopped too. Nervousness crept down his spine as he pondered who it could be. Unexpectedly, Alexei came flying down and perched on Kenji’s shoulder.

Surprised, yet he continued on, relaying the day’s events with Alexei through mindtouching. Kenji was slowly approaching a very cleverly disguised building, hidden discreetly behind a large boulder. The entrance was traced to a very small outcrop in the rock where it fell off naturally. Kenji punched in the passcode on the small machine hidden under the bush, and the door opened. As Kenji walked in, he felt the cool breeze of air conditioning.
