The Economics of MesoRich.com and others

I was playing MapleStory and noticed an advertisement in-game about MesoRich.com. Shortly after, a GM announced that the user was banned. I thought to myself, IS MapleStory THAT affected by secondary markets like MesoRich.com? Being bored as I am, I did some research.

1]Nexon vs. MesoRich.com
The reason why Nexon bans MesoRich.com ads and other vendor ads instead of players who actually deserve it (ie those who use unfair tools) is because these websites detract from their consumers. Nexon wants to SELL their Nexon points and does not want to face any competition or detraction of sales from companies like MesoRich.com.
Q: So then, why hasn’t Nexon just banned permanently all the advertisers (lets say via IP block)?
A: Nexon GAINS money from MesoRich.com and other adverts. In order for a megaphone message to appear, companies like MesoRich.com pay $5.00 minimum to spread their slogan and testimonials. If banned temporarily, Nexon KNOWS they will buy more and more Nexon Cash and as a result increase their earnings. Nexon may publicly not support secondary markets but knows that they are a large buyer of their products.

2]Mesos Inflation?
In terms of in-game economics, people have voiced concerns that secondary markets are pumping massive amounts of Mesos into the game, causing a huge supply of Mesos (and subsequently raising the “price” or value of the items). A 5 million mesos item can now be worth 100 million.

Q: Is that really true?
A: Not really. MesoRich continues to operate which means they are using normal means of obtaining all their mesos (such as direct trading). If that is the case, Mesos are not being CREATED they are simply be recycled throughout the game by gamers who have sold their Mesos to MesoRich.com. Even if the secondary markets did spend hours creating Mesos, the taxes on Mesos trades (when one player trades mesos with another) deletes a certain % of Mesos each time. This helps dilute any possible inflation.

3]A Split Economy
Q: Is it the case, then, that those who buy Mesos will constantly become richer and richer causing a split in-game economy of poor characters and rich characters?
A: Again, not really. I assume the average time to get rid of your Mesos once you buy it from MesoRich.com is about 1-5 days. Not many people I know hold onto their newly bought Mesos. They trade it, drop it, give it etc. The Mesos just recycles itself into the game without causing the majority of players to hold a huge amount of Meso wealth.

Now, I know I seem like I am support the secondary market industry but that is not true. I am simply reporting, objectively, the misconceptions and ideas regarding companies like Lewt, MesoRich, MesoXpress and others.

If you have any questions, I’d like to hear them and maybe answer it if i know the answer!

  1. XD I’ve almost clean forgotten all my Economics. The only relevant thing I remember is the fact that with higher money supply, aggregate demand increaseas snd prices will rise if the economy is at full employment. Or something like that.

Bleh. I shall not show off my bad economics skillz.

  2. I picked Psychology in lieu of Economics, so I’ve never understood it. But what you’re saying does make sense. :3

  3. I think you’re right in some ways. However, I don’t completely understand what Lewt and all those other sites do. I do, however, doubt the fact Nexon supports those Smega advertisers. They’re only probably buying one Smega just to say it, and many of them could be just normal players who make accounts with names like “eiadjfsadflasd” so that their main accounts won’t get banned. Anyway, I have hardly any idea what I’m talking about, so I’ll hit submit now.

  4. Nexon bans advertisements from Meso-Rich and other sites like that, because those sites uses hacks to gain all the money.
They’re called ‘Meso Farmers’, and are hacking so they earn meso ; they get banned eventually, but before that, they already moved the meso they have gained from all the hacking to other accounts, so they don’t lose anything ;; Meso-rich and such are exploiting the game and selling the products they gain from doing so for real money.

That’s why nexon bans them. Also, in every FM (ch1) as far as I know, there is a randomly named character botting stuff like “MESORICH.COM SELLING 10MIL FOR ONLY 5 DOLLARS @@@@@” and repeating it with one extra “@” everytime every 3 seconds, so they avoid the spam filter.

In other words ; Avoid sites like meso-rich and such, and they’ll go bankrupt and lose intrest in MapleStory eventually, meaning less hackers, more fun.

  5. It may seem logical. However, most of the Meso selling websites are actually account hacking websites.
They hack into other rich accounts or vac hack with high level characters and store the money and sell them. Although some others earn their the hard way, which is to train legit-ly and sell them.

Yet, Nexon is just trying to prevent the hacking community from building stronger and higher.
Because they ask for your credit card numbers and somewhat, they might steal your credit card and steal money from your bank account. The original Global website received emails from Banks (ie. Wellsfargo, SunTrust, etc). The Banks informed them about the stolen credit cards which lead Global to a huge loss of money, which caused selling the game to Nexon.

In other words, Nexon is trying to prevent the banks from “partially” suing them.
