When I say I play MapleStory to some people, they go “man, it’s 2-d, how good can it be?” Obviously, they’ve never seen the likes of RuneScape.
As far as I know, MapleStory’s combat system (I just say ‘combat system’ because it’s the basis of MMORPGs) is as good as it gets! It’s dynamic, the uses of your skills are different in every situation, you can employ tactic with the attack’s attributes (ice to render monsters powerless, sacrifice to bypass a monster’s defence, etc), and you can work with other people to train. What I find good is that it’s not based on locking onto a monster, you just hit what you can, and that reflects combat more realistically than runescape’s combat system, where if you’re up against 2 or more enemies of similar power, you’re screwed.
While I’m at it, allow me to go into a rant about why MapleStory combat is better than RuneScape’s. In runescape, there’s basically nothing to enhance gameplay. By that, I mean supportive skills. I’m not going to accept the “Run” function in RuneScape as an equivalent to haste, so forget about it. all you can do is “hmm, fighting defensively isn’t working for me… I think I’ll use slash…” All you do is change the attack animation, and POOF! You pwn the enemy 1.2 times faster! What skill does that take? You click and wait!
By the way, if you’ve ever played RuneScape, you know how tedious getting around is. No haste, no teleport, no flash jump, no thrust. You can’t even take advantage of your knowledge of the game! All you do is click a spot in the minimap, and your character just takes the shortest route there! And don’t even get me started on the auto-retaliate. if you’re doing something, and a monster stabs you from behind, you turn around and face it automatically, only to have to click on whatever you’re doing to continue. It would be easier to jsut finish what you’re doing, and THEN slash your enemy to oblivion, one uniform hit after another, but NO! It has to be programmed so that everything takes 3 times longer! Also 3 times the HP loss!
Speaking of HP, do you know how annoying it is that your inventory is the size of one CATEGORY in a MapleStory? you can carry about 20 healing items with you. UNSTACKED. Can you imagine going to Zakum with 20 potions max? That’s how many someone could use in a minute!
Some people say that MapleStory sucks because ther’s no PvP. Well, can you imagine a wozard using lightning to train, some level 10 walks by, BOOM. he/she’s dead. MapleStory just won’t allow for PvP, and perhaps it’s a good thing! Imagine Zakum’s cave, but it was a PvP area! It would be MADNESS! First person casts an area-based attack, BAM, 6 people gone, right there! And do you think anyone would be able to withstand one of Tiger’s dragon busters? Any battle would be over in a matter of SECONDS! In Runescape, there’s so much leisure, you fight with the mouse, using one hand, and you’re eating lunch with your other!
Well, I guess this jsut turned out to be a rant about my negative opinion regarding RuneScape and not about MapleStory’s gameplay… I hope I didn’t waste too much of your time… I guess it’s your fault too for not stopping when I said I’ll go into a rant, so… um… Thanks for reading…?
finally someone said all the things ive been thinking forever
taxi is the best thing to happen in any mmo
My pvp is organized, not random killing.
Read my blog, if you want.
MS’s battle system is nice, but it’s nothing incredible. Some skills are poorly set up (savage blow isn’t usefull until level 21) and others are pointless. Training can get montonous, (no where close to Runescape though) but there’s something about MS that just keeps you coming back for more even after playing games like Talesweaver, RO, WoW, and GW.
Overall, it is good, if RS was any decent. Basically, you could take a Flash game and it be better than RS. Basically everyone, but the people who play it, despise the game.
I didn’t really prefer it because it made some bold statements backed up only with opinions. Which, I really don’t like. There are a lot of things true, but what you find tedious isn’t what the guy next door finds tedious while he cleans the drool off his bib.
RS may be 3-D but the quality and graphics suk compared to maple’s. Besides, runescape is 3-D only because you can’t KS there. If you get KSed in a 3-D world, it’s almost impossible to find out the person that KSed you
yea.runescape i think is a game for small kids.u don`t hafta think.
I think savage low only granted power later is intentional. As you progress and pump skill points into sb you see how it is slowly strengthened and this alone is a motivation. If sb was strong since the first sp you will not feel like you have achieved anything.

I’m not saying I want it immediately strong, I just don’t think its fair for bandits to be left behind in the dust (37 if you sb to 21 first, much later fi you put some into mastery). It just makes leveling bandits impossible for a long time.
Yea, u don’t have to use ur brain to fight, however, u have to use LOTS OF UR IQ for hard quests,
2 years ago, I thought rs was the best game i ever played (i didn’t no any other games at that time XP) and i kept on using guides to cheat my way to completing a quest,
Now i think ms is better
I agree that MS can’t ever PVP. The way the skills are built: it’s too imbalanced.
Good blog ^^
Yup yup! MapleStory is fun like that!
The battle system in Maple is so vast if you think about it! There are different types for all different types of characters!
For Sins, you’re jumping left and right flinging stars every which way!
For Bandits, you’re charging at the enemy and unleashing a savage blow as you jump and fly over the enemy so you can attack again from behind!
Mages you’re teleporting in and casting powerful spells and teleporting away to cast more from a distance!
For archers you’re standing back firing vollies of arrows to chip off all the monsters before they can get to you!
For Warriors you’re right up in the action swinging huge weapons and bestowing massive damage!
(And for noobs, they walk up to the enemy, get hurt, and spam “Roger’s Apple’s”)
And the styles change with the player too!
But I have to say, I played RuneScape for a few months a year or two ago, and I’ve been playing MapleStory for about a year. . . And I have to say, of all the time I’ve spent in both games, the community in RuneScape is considerably nicer and more pleasant than the community in MapleStory. I don’t know if it’s changed since I last played, but that’s how I remember it.
I Saw on Wikipidea that MS has a Place for PvP ( yu yen garden if im correct ) but i dont know how it looks or how the PvP works , Well anyways , nice Blog ^^
