Hacked!: Chapter 01

HACKED!

A continuation from the prologue–

Chapter 01: Hacked!

The 17-year-old lived a decent life, sheltered by the many evils life had to offer him. He was a suburban kid, but not the stereotyped kind that wore preppy clothes or listened to emo music. He was just, normal. Not many bad things have happened to him so far, unless you’d like to count getting beat up once in Middle School. Nothing devastating at least, like a family death or failing a class.

So when the 17-year-old’s online character was deleted after he had built it up for a year, making friends, using more than 100 dollars worth on special items and gimmicks, training whenever he found the chance, practically making it one of his favorite hobbies, he was devastated. He did not want to admit to himself what just happened. He attempted to type in his username and password to continue playing Maple Story.

“Damnit!” he typed his username and password again.

“No…they really deleted my account, I can’t believe this! Oh my god, a year’s worth of my time washed away in a matter of moments! I was one level from getting the third job advancement. FCUK! FCUK! FCUK!”

The 17-year-old raged and cursed all day that day. It took him 3 hours to cool down and decide to report the incident to MapleGlobular.com . He wrote a short, emotionally flustered paragraph explaining what happened including screenshots taken. He was a button-press away from sending the message when he thought of the last words Novac told him, “May the weak perish and the strong survive…Maybe, perhaps the only way to defeat the hackers is to become one.” For a long while he thought of this idea.

“A Gamemaster is just like a hacker except they fight against the hacker threat. And I also don’t want to train for an entire year again to get back to my former glory. A normal player is too weak to do anything to a hacker, so it looks like becoming a hacker is the only option to fight back. But how can I become a hacker? I don’t know a single thing about hacking.” This puzzling thought did not stop the 17-year-old though. He decided to do his research.

“Let’s see…” he googled ‘Hacking 101’. “This doesn’t seem as hard as it looks. I guess I’ve decided then. I’ll return to Maple Story as a hacker, in order to terminate other hackers and serve justice to those who deserve it most!” Fueled by his divinely new purpose and ambitions the 17-year-old began to study hacking to the fullest.

2 months passed by when the 17-year-old felt he knew enough about hacking to return to Maple Story. “I’m ready.” He said to himself and setup a new account. He went through the character creation process. “Name…Let’s see if Corill will work.” He typed in ‘Corill’.

[This name is currently in use.]

“Oh well, it was worth a try.” The 17-year-old had thought of a billion names to use already but he wanted it to be just right. “I need a name that’s intimidating, a name that shouts vengeance and revenge. It should sound bitter, emotionless, and inhumane!” The 17-year-old continued to think.
He typed in ‘Remnant’.

[This name may be used.]

“After all, my new character is nothing more than a remnant of my former. What a perfect name to choose! Time to enter the game world again, finally.”

Remnant sped past everything in Maple Island as quickly as possible. “I have hacker abilities, I don’t have to train here.” He left and rode the ship to Victoria Island, still at Level 1.

When he arrived in Victoria Island he traveled the land in search of the perfect training spot where no one would spot him hacking. He found his first spot near a secluded tree in Ellinia. “Let’s setup god-mode first. Remnant giggled at the irony of becoming what he had fought against for so long. Still he hoped he wouldn’t fall to the temptations of a hacker’s way of life. “GOD-MODE INITIALIZED”.

Remnant ran up to a Slime and allowed it to hit him. ‘0 damage’ rose above Remnant’s head. “Sweet. Alright, now let’s set-up a vacuum hack (vac hack for short).”

As he put forth his hand Remnant shouted two words. “VAC HACK!” A blue ball of energy rose from his hand and levitated to his spot of choice. Slime and Horny Mushrooms were instantly vacuumed to the blue ball. Keeping hold of the vac hack with his left hand Remnant would slash at the monsters with his right, killing all of them in one strike with his god-like strength. He would constantly do this technique in total secrecy and isolation until he was qualified to become a Crusader. It only took him two weeks.

Now Remnant was a powerful Crusader not to be messed with. He chose the warrior class earlier on for appearance benefits. A warrior’s look is the most intimidating, he thought, especially once you reach the 3rd class. After all, a hacker doesn’t truly rely on normal skills. They rely on hacker abilities alone.

During the road to the Crusader rank, Remnant trained using just about all his hacker abilities including the ones he might need if he had to engage in PvP with a hacker. He played the role of ‘bad guy’ to many innocent noobs in order to perfect his techniques. He didn’t want to hurt any innocent people, but he was aware that emotions would have to be held back for his greater purpose. He became proficient with all abilities with the exception of one, which he never tried to use: Illegal Account Termination was its official name. But hackers knew it as Vanquish.

Atop of the warm sunlit roofs of Kerning City, Remnant now waited for a signal of distress; anything that could send him off to terminate a hacker for the first time. Below him the citizens moved at a busy pace giving the delusion that everything was safe in the world. Remnant knew better and it strangely satisfied him knowing that the tasks he planned to accomplish would not be appreciated by anyone but himself.

He stood silent wearing one of the outfits he used to always wear as Corill, a Bomber Jacket, Patched Jeans, Blue Shades, and Blue Air H’s. In fact, Remnant was fairly identical to his former self. The only difference was the huge Devil’s Sunrise Blade he carried on his back now instead of an Olympus Bow.

  2. it doesn’t really suck, its pretty cool.
But you condensed a lot of stuff into this chapter, so it felt rushed.
This story reminds me of .hack// ^_^

  3. my friend hacks what the, ? vanquish? i thought it was account killing it was called! by my friend >.> i like this story cuz sometimes tiger shares accounts and he just came bak into global and now im a hacker! what the heck is wrong with my mind>?

  4. I can’t use ‘Cor’ as an exclamation anymore, can I? Anyway, I just read through all your chapters in sleepywood.net. Nice story, but like your commentors said, you could improve on the dialogue and stuff, especially on the later chapters. Some phrases you used were awkward too, but I’m lazy to quote. Maybe you could edit it a little more before you post it onto MMOtales.

It’s a good story though Keep it up!

  5. Nice continuation to the last chapter, really creative like the prologue. Besides some spelling mistakes and some awkward dialogue moments the story’s great so far. Also, I agree with the other posters, it sounds like .hack a lot. Anyways keep writing, I will like to take a read at the next chapters.
