Last of the Shadow Foxes: 1 Depravation

“RUN, RUN, FOR THE LOVE OF THE DARK LORD, RUN!!!”

Remus’s cries pulsed through the grove.
Shiv span around, just fast enough to glimpse something rushing through the foliage before it shredded him. Emerson saw it turn for him and his blood chilled. The distance between the assassin and the beast closed impossibly fast and Emerson barely had time to dive. The beast’s claws raked across his midriff, tearing his robes.
“Fantine? What are you doing, RUN!!!” Emerson heard Remus yell. He jumped back on his feet and saw the female assassin deathly still. The rich imperial purple fox tattoo on her face was contrasting with her albino skin.

The beast was nowhere to be seen. Fantine drew a steely in each hand. Emerson’s throat went dry and he glanced around. A bead of sweat trickled down his face. There! A shape!
Zing-Zing!
The steelies cut through the air. Specks of blood flew.
The shape disappeared. Fantine sighed and smiled at Emerson. Remus let out the breath he had been instinctively holding.
“Fantine got it,” Emerson thought, “good old Fantine, sharpest eyes in the Shadow Foxes.” Adonis appeared beside Emerson.
“Fantine saved us again. I could kiss her.”
“And get another slap?”
Adonis grinned then looked around.
“Hey, where is she?”
Emerson peered into the bushes around the clearing, then looked back to find Adonis missing. There was an inhumane scream and Emerson pivoted to see Remus fly out of the foliage.
In two pieces.

The beast emerged behind the corpse of his guild leader with the remains of Adonis and Fantine in its massive claws.
Fantine was still alive.
“Run. Emerson. This. Is. Murder.” She whispered, her eyes clouding over.
Emerson stared in horror at his friends’ corpses and bolted. Scrambling through the grove, blundering into vines and leaves, cutting himself on thorns and tripping on roots, Emerson ran like he had never run before.
“There are three of us left, there are three of us left.” Emerson mumbled as he continued on. A high-pitched scream reached his ears.
“There are two of us left, there are two of us left.” Emerson rambled on, he tripped over a massive root and careered into a tree trunk where he curled up. A cry sounded in the air, followed by the sound of tearing flora. Emerson saw Javier leaping from tree branch to tree branch, looking back over his shoulder. Soon he disappeared from his line of sight. There was a slashing sound, then everything became silent. Emerson’s eyes went blank and he began to rock back and forth.
“Only me left, only me left, only me left, only..me..left.”
His vision blurred and Emerson, the last of the Shadow Foxes, drifted into unconsciousness.
