Last of the Shadow Foxes: 3 Reminiscent

The pale amber eyes stared back at him. Emerson looked away from his field dagger’s blade. He marvelled the craftsmanship of the weapon. Hand forged from the fires of Renothis, his guild’s base. He felt the intricate carving of the hilt, the smoothness of the blade. The fine enchantment woven within the dagger. The rune etched at the bottom of the hilt. This was not just any field dagger; this was his sister’s field dagger. read more

“And they brought Murder with them.”
The words echoed in Emerson’s mind.
Murder. Murder. Murder.
He felt sick, his insides churning as the poisonous words seeped in. The assassin clutched his head as a wave of nausea washed over him. Without warning, he bolted past Sawyer and sprinted down the corridors. Sawyer made as to follow but Gavrilla held him back.
“Sawyer, alert everyone, get them geared up. Now.” The guild leader ordered. Sawyer nodded and left the room.
“Mali, Gates, Raynard, with me.”
The rest of the occupants emptied the room. read more

Last of the Shadow Foxes: 1 Depravation

“RUN, RUN, FOR THE LOVE OF THE DARK LORD, RUN!!!”

Remus’s cries pulsed through the grove.
Shiv span around, just fast enough to glimpse something rushing through the foliage before it shredded him. Emerson saw it turn for him and his blood chilled. The distance between the assassin and the beast closed impossibly fast and Emerson barely had time to dive. The beast’s claws raked across his midriff, tearing his robes.
“Fantine? What are you doing, RUN!!!” Emerson heard Remus yell. He jumped back on his feet and saw the female assassin deathly still. The rich imperial purple fox tattoo on her face was contrasting with her albino skin. read more

Last of the Shadow Foxes: 2 Recovery

Subway 303, the last stop after civilization. Completely deserted. That is except for some lowly beggars. Or at least, what appeared to beggars. Emerson heaved away the grate and climbed out of the tunnels. Gavrilla followed behind him. Emerson saw the beggars, dressed in filthy rags and covered in grim and dirt.
“What are these beggars doing here? Couldn’t they slip your secret?” He asked the guild master. Gavrilla laughed.
“Beggars? Emerson my dear, these aren’t beggars.” And with that she gave a shrill whistle. Before Emerson’s eyes a haze descended on the ‘beggars’ and when it lifted, in their places were several bandits.
“What? Where? When?” Emerson spluttered, stunned by the sudden transformation.
“It’s a skill we learn called Discloak, allows us to meld into crowds to avoid attention. Or, in this case, provide sentries without revealing our hideout.” The hermit explained to the baffled assassin. Emerson looked at the bandits wearily. Gavrilla called over a bandit. His name was Sawyer and he too had the maple leaf mark over his left eye.
“Sawyer here will accompany us on our hunt. He’s an expert scout.” Gavrilla whispered in Emerson’s ear. Sawyer twirled his Shinkita in one hand and gripped his Maple shield in the other. read more

Emerson heard voices. Faint, like a long distance away.
“Gavrilla, come quick, this sin is close to death.”
“That’s a lot of blood Mali.”
“Don’t just stand there, help me carry him.”

Then back to darkness. Memories of his guild, the Shadow Foxes, revolved in his mind.
His induction into the guild, after thirty days of rigorous training. The friendly smiles of the guild members, as Remus presented him with his first set of Kumbis. Throwing practice in the underground training room. The incredible throw of his Kumbi splitting Aloysius’s Mokbi in half. The throwing competitions, himself coming third behind Remus and Fantine.
The guild wars, with the Dark Apostles and Rangers of Avelon. How Javier saved his life by blocking the arrows with his Tobis. How they crippled the Dark Apostles and banished them from Construction Site 2A.
Remus, guild leader and mentor. Fantine, second in command and sharpshooter. Adonis, cheerful and joking. Javier, stoic and calm, Aloysius, hot tempered and sly. Shiv, poet and tactician.
All friends.
All dead. read more
