link Has many good accounts and instructions as to how to tame ghost wolf. So does link
I have heard of two ways to tame ghostwolf, but have used only one of them. The first, tried, tested and true, can only be used on players lvl 66 and up. I farmed Mana Tombs until I had enough of the spirit shards to buy one of the Helms with a meta gem slot at Allarian Stronghold [Pardon the spelling, its the 2nd flight path for alliance in Terokkar Forest. Ill assume there is a similar vendor in the second Horde Flight Path.]
The helms require level 66, but youll be plenty occupied. For you also need another piece of armor with a blue gem slot [You can get it easily doing some of the local quests. Then by a cheap blue gem from Honor Hold or once again, the horde town in Hellfire.] For your meta Gem slot, you need a Mystical Skyfire Diamond and it MUST be this gem. I found it easiest to simply buy the mats for a skyfire diamond off the AH, then find a Alc to transmute it into a Skyfire Diamond. THEN find a Jem Cutter to cut it into a “Mystical Skyfire Diamond.” You may have some trouble finding a JC with the ability to do it, but they are out there, just keep at it.
Once you have your proper armor, stable your current pet and head off to Dustwallow Marsh with both a Priest that knows Mind Control, A 70 shaman Draenai [Or Troll for Horde] and whoever else wants to tag along. Although Drums of war are not required, feel free to bring on a Leatherworker that can use them for you.
Now, you are going to head to the northern Blackhoof Grimtotem village In Dustwallow Marsh. The Mob’s are only around level 30, so they wont be a problem. Now its the Grimtotem Spirit-Shifter’s that you are after. These tauren NPC’s summon the ghostwolves. The reason you had to go to the trouble to getting this particular party and armor is because of the Ghostwolf’s time. Once summon, they only last around 7-8 seconds before dying automatically. It may take a few tries before your group gets everything just right.
First, have your priest Mind Control the Grimtotem Spirit-Shifter, then, spam either your aspects, or trueshot aura until you sort of emit a ‘sparkle’. Its best to make your gem proc before you egin, so your party knows what to look for. The gem, when proc’s, cuts casting time of your next spell in half- aka, tame beast. Tame beast is 20 seconds long- so it will be brought down to ten.
Now, once your gem proc’s, Your priest should cast the spell to summon the wolves though the Grimtotem Spirit-Shifter they are controlling. Have your shaman cast Heroism [Or troll cast Bloodlust], and if applicable, your Leatherworker use the drums- and at the same time cast tame beast on one of the summoned wolves. [JuJu Flurry can also work in place of the drums]
Id like to note that to make things way easier, you should use a macro for this step. What I used was:
/Target Grimtotem Spirit Guide
/Cast Tame beast
Having that in one keystroke saves you a lot of hassle.
It may take a few tries to do, and when you do finally tame it, it will still die. However, a simple resurrect will bring back your new and cool Ghost Wolf! Be sure to thank all that helped you in your quest for this neat and elusive pet!
The second and less documented version was done solo by a hunter who used their freezing trap. I have not tested this, and would still suggest you bring along a priest to MC the mob to help you get the timing down.
Mind Control the Mob. Throw up a juju Flurry if you have one, put down the ice trap, then let the priest summon the wolves. Apparently Tame beast does not break ice trap- and ice trap lasts 20 seconds. So it is possible to get this pet below level 66. Using a juju Flurry would be a good idea to give you a small margin of error.
Some Notes About Ghostwolf:
As of now, ghost wolf has some quirky walk/run issues. It was reported from a GM that it will probably be fixed in the next update.
As a higher level, its quite difficult to raise up your pets level- I found it hard as a BM, for I depend a lot on my pet’s tanking abilities. Before hitting lvl 60 it could not hold aggro at all.
It will take a bit longer then usual before its happiness goes up. Why this is- is unknown, but rest assured that it DOES. At level 62, mine is at top happiness and has been for a while.
I hope this helps out anyone interested in this pet. If you have more questions, PST me on the Garona Server [Im Wolfwings there].
