Aurora’s Redemption – Thirty

¤ The Kiss of Resurrection!

‘Silver!’ Jaysen called softly into the sleeping girl’s ear. ‘Wake up!’

‘…see you again?’ Silver mumbled, to Jaysen’s surprise, then turned away from him, eyes still tightly shut. Her hands wound tightly around the backpack next to her head.

‘What, she’s still not awake?’ Ida appeared next to Jaysen, worried. ‘It’s only forty-five minutes more before the ship leaves Orbis Station.’

‘What can I do?’ Jaysen sighed in exasperation, scratching his head. ‘Oi, lady Silver!’ He called again. ‘We could catch up on your beauty sleep on the ship!’ The sleeping girl mumbled some more, as if not hearing Jaysen, and hugged her backpack tighter.

‘Silver!’ Jaysen said even louder now, shaking her by the shoulder. This time, Silver responded, her eyes opening groggily as she was shaken out of her sleep. ‘Huh?’

‘We are going to be late for the ship ride!’ The bandit said urgently, beckoning Silver to get off the bed.

‘Ship… ride?’ Silver mumbled, disorientated. There were still shreds of her strange dream floating around in her mind, and she struggled to recall them. There had been a dark room, with two strange windows, and this faceless, voiceless person… Then, Jaysen’s words worked their way through the fog, and realisation dawned in her sleepy grey eyes. ‘Oh! The ship ride!’ She scrambled off the bed in a burst of energy, fully conscious now.

‘Finally, the lady awakens!’ Jaysen exclaimed in relief, then grabbed Silver’s backpack off her bed and handed it to her as she dashed past him. ‘I was about to test if the method the prince used on the princess in ‘Sleeping Eyes’ really worked or not.’

Silver disappeared behind the dressing board in the room to change. ‘It probably would. I expect your breath is about as bad as that Cold-Eye prince’s.’ Emerging in her Red Piettra set and Red Napoleon, she snatched her Blue Maro off the hook by the door and crammed it over her silver curls. ‘Bad enough to wake the dead,’ she added under her breath. Ida laughed, hearing Silver’s muttered comment from where she stood at the door.

Jaysen heard Silver too, and grinned. ‘Hey, I wouldn’t mind having such an uber cool power. Imagine,’ he threw his hands apart dramatically, ‘The Kiss of Resurrection! I’ll put all clerics out of business.’

‘Urgh.’ Silver stopped in the middle of strapping her Olympus on her back, her face twisted in disgust. ‘Spare me. I haven’t even had breakfast.’

‘You’d better hurry,’ Ida said, ‘There’s only about forty minutes before the ship leaves.’

‘On second thought, I have officially lost appetite for breakfast.’ Silver said wryly, shooting a pointed look at Jaysen. ‘Ida, are you leaving this house with us?’

‘Yes.’ Ida gave a tentative smile. ‘I have already contacted my friend and she said I am welcomed to drop in on her anytime.’

‘Oh, this reminds me.’ Silver dug around in a small pocket in her backpack and emerged with a whisper mirror identical to the one she used to call on Grendel. The dark disc in its centre shimmered slightly as she handed it to Ida. ‘I’ve already linked it to my whisper mirror. Just say my name into it, and we should be able to speak.’ A strange sense of deja vu seemed to nudge her as she instructed Ida, as if she had given similar instructions to someone before… Silver tucked that thought away for the moment, resolving to look at it later.

‘Thank you.’ Ida took the whisper mirror and tucked it away safely in her travelling case. ‘Make sure you tell me when you get back to Orbis.’

Jaysen cleared his throat meaningfully, adjusting the shoulder strap of his backpack. ‘Come now, ladies. We can say our touching goodbyes at the station after we make sure that we can get tickets to board the ship on time.’

‘Ah. Let’s go then.’ With that, the trio went downstairs, and after bidding farewell to Elma the housekeeper and thanking her for her care, left Hella’s house for Orbis Station.
