Chapter 5: A Fortune Cookie

The night air was cool, as the force of my entire body struck through, with a loud crack, the wooden wall of my small shack and burst out into the darkness. I tumbled into the ground and was splashed with mud. I picked myself up and recovered. The crescent moon in the sky shone dully and a fog hid the ground from view. The trees eliminated all light, and all chances of me being sighted. I was making my getaway.

Sounds of squishiness were created, as I crouched slowly along the wet, damp ground. My senses were heightened and I was rather calm. Everything is going smoothly!! The city was sound asleep and it seemed dead. The rhythm of the sounds of the night echoed and repeated themselves like a calm lullaby. The streets were clear of any late night stalkers and it appeared as I would walk out without any trouble.

But Zamrar had warned me there would be guards that stood at the front gates, but he had never given me any other possible options to exit the town. As I snuck through the grass and zoomed around the trees, I suddenly spotted a small light protruding from a light post and next to it, standing lifelessly, a man armored with a spear and a shield. He was patrolling the land, but wasn’t doing a good job of it. He was a young man who was built up and had a mean face, and he was slouched over, leaning on the hay which was supporting his body weight.

Okay…This is no problem. If I just creep by silently and quickly, he won’t even see me. Yeah, it’s a piece of cake. Speaking of cake I could use some right now!, I outlined in my mind as I heard my stomach growl. That plan was shattered as my foot squashed on to a Dorito chip that was littered on the ground. The overwhelming noise of the delaying crunch alerted the guard as the snack cracked into a million pieces. Wow!…nice job…if that doesn’t ruin an escape and destroy your chances of freedom, then I don’t know what does! I thought sarcastically and displeasingly. The protector of the city, shot up to his full largeness, and grabbed his steel spear.

I reacted swiftly and brilliantly, to the foiling of the plan, and threw a rock at the direction of the brightness. The light flickered out, as my target was achieved.

The guard responded in a ruckus and blabbered out,” Y-you there, stop! Sh-show yourself before I am forced to respond to this threat with action and authority.”

I paid no attention to his jumbling of words that sprayed out of his mouth, which seemed like he was frightened of the disturbance I had caused. I darted out of the place of the occurrence of the chaos, making way for the exit. In the stretch to the gate, a tiny amount of light flashed through an opening in the trees, piercing through the darkness of the night. The light reflected off of my figure and I could observe the shadow of the guard as he headed towards my pinpoint.

He swung his spear skillfully through the air as he tried to hit me with a swinging hit. I jumped acknowledgedly backwards, the spear swiping at my shirt as it flew by. My opponent took a step back, and then flung his momentum of his body forwards jabbing out with his spear trying to send a deathly poke into me. I ripped my sword out and knocked out the blow with a downward defensive maneuver. I was feeling hyper, and moved my hand to the side sending an offensive strike, whizzing at the soldier. The air got trapped in the swing and it made a swooshing sound. The defender parried the blow astonishingly fast with an upward movement and my sword plucked out of my hand, hit the ground and sunk into soil, wiggling vibrantly.

Once again, I made a mind-blowing opposing shift and I grabbed the spear, using my body I tugged at the wooden pole and made him lose his balance as he went crashing into the ground beside me. The man managed to collect himself and started getting up. That was just a quick strike he didn’t expect. He easily overpowers me. I better hide before he stands again.

I performed a dive and I disguised myself behind the piles of hay that had been beat down into a small group, from the lookout’s behind as he rested against them earlier. I kneeled down there, feeling shocked and breathless. My mind was searching, looking for an answer to this problem. The watchman came closer, peering everywhere to see if he could identify my shape of darkness. He ascended above me and it appeared as I would be revealed by his eye sight. My mind was in a state of panic and frenzy.

Miraculously he had gazed at the spot I was concealed and proceeded on. He apparently had not looked well enough because the darkness had cloaked me into the shadow of the dark, yellow hay Now is the time to respond, do something, anything! I inspected my perimeter and noticed an object placed on the ground. I picked up the dark, black farmer fork and brought myself up, carefully and noiselessly. Bending my elbows, I gradually lifted the heavy massed weapon behind my head. I brought the weight down, letting the force of the swagger take over. Before the object hit its mark, the guard turned around and his face twisted into one with terror, but his open mouth would not let out a scream of despair. The man was keeled over on the ground, not dead but out cold.

Whew!! That could have been ugly and disastrous. Hey! See if you can loot anything from the wounded man. I examined the articles the man had in his possession. I stole his pots, his few daggers, and a coke can. I studied the strange can, the round plastic container said Enjoy! There was a description of the ingredients on the back that read as follows: This drink, when used can recover all your strength, health and magic power and it also adds unbelievable speed. Furthermore, it can charge you up to powers that you never knew about before. This looks like it could be used on a hot, summer day! Refreshing! I thought, delighted at my amazing find, once again. Now, I was in the possession of two treasures, which were the coke can and a faded glowing necklace.

Surveying further into the guard’s belongings, I stumbled upon a cookie in a clear bag. I picked up the strange dessert and eyed the weird form the cookie held. This must have been crafted by some of the most, intelligent people in the universe! I ripped the bag apart, and the cookie burst out of its package, skedaddling into the wind. I ran forth, trying to catch it and halt its path to the ground. The projectile bounced off my arm, and I fumbled and bended my arms struggling to catch the strange goody. I snatched it out of the air, stopping the squirming motions I was creating with my arms.

I popped the cookie into my mouth, and broke the snack up in my mouth, generating loud crunchy noises. I was about to swallow, when I choked on something. I started gagging and my eyes watered up. The piece of paper, that was measured two by two feet, rocketed out of my mouth and floated in the air, with the breeze rocking it back and forth.

Grabbing the piece of paper I opened the document up. It was a little bit hard to read because of the saliva slimed over it and the bite marks.

The power given to you by your family, makes you noble and inspires others. In your future there are many surprises held and that shall reveal themselves to you. Confusing problems you must solve to follow through with your destiny. You shall become acquainted with a best friend that will sacrifice herself for you, all of this occurring in a very quick amount of time. Altering the dimensions and completely changing the rhythm of Mapleworld’s existence, shall become evident if you survive long enough. Even though the people shall follow your lead and thrust their lives into your hands, at one time you will be hated by all who thrive in this amazing land of the five islands: Vic, Florina, Orbis, Ludi, and Darpethia, a non existent residence. Only one shall believe you though, but when all is done he shall turn against your power. The balance of the Maple world shall be decided by darkness.

Wow! Amazing how much they can fit out on this little scrap of paper. But this isn’t true. It’s all baloney! Hey, I could use a baloney sandwich right about now. I didn’t realize the significance of the foretelling it had at that moment, but later I uncovered the meanings of all these objectives. Instead of throwing the little piece of paper away, I held onto it and shoved my destiny into the pocket of my new black pants that went along with my swiped silver armor. Not realizing there was a tiny message with extra advice on the bottom of the fortune: Written by Spiruna, Copyright of DreamTell! 2007 All fortunes find their owner somehow.

The slumbering city was left behind as I sprinted into open fields , letting the reviving air twirl my flowing, brown hair backward. I was running, with a great deal of unrecognized knowledge in my pants, and lots of health restoring potions. I was once again running, and felt like running would show up multiple times in my life and never disappear. In the morning Chief Stan and Zamrar, the one who had pitched me this idea, would find me nowhere around the city and the Mayor of the town would be frustrated, like he always was. I was running this time, with more sense of direction and more of an idea of where my life would lead me. But grasping the confusing facts of the world and no known map plotted out in my head made me feel like one man in a huge, giant world. My life had a greater purpose now, and had a manual planned out for how it would ensue, but it didn’t have a conclusion, yet.
