Garrett walked down the dark hallway towards my room, with Stephen right behind him. Winnie was a few yards behind, striding quietly so not to be discovered. She did a quick gesture with her kage, and continued following the two boys.
In a single move, Stephen had Garrett pinned to the wooden wall. His V2000 was against his neck. “I’m not going to watch you walk away with Kaede again.”
Garrett’s pulse quickened. “Stephen, what the crap?!”
In his head, Stephen wasn’t feeling right. He just blabbed out deliriously, “Haha I fooled youuuu. . . The only way for Kaede to remember you is if she willingly kisses you when I’m there. But I’m not going to let you take my girl. Kaede’s mine. So if you go bye bye then there’s no way she’ll return to you.” He pulled an arrow back. “Bye bye, Garrett.”
The arrow was released just as I came bounding down the hallway. “GARRETT!” His body fell to the floor once again. In my head, a scene flashed by. A cave. Akito. A kandayo. Garrett’s body. Fly eyes. “Oh my God,” I fell to the floor at Garrett’s side. “I remember. Garrett. The cave. . .” I broke down and started crying over Garrett’s body. Stephen’s V2000 fell to the floor with a clunk.
“I lost,” was all he said, and walked out of the hospital.
Winnie came out from her hiding spot and said, “I’m sorry Kaede, but I can’t revive Garrett again.”
I stared at his body with the steel arrow engraved deep inside his neck. My eyes were engrossed with tears as I ran my fingers across his face. “Oh Garrett, why do love stories always have to end like this?” I laid my head on his still chest and closed my eyes, imagining it filled with breath again. Winnie walked away to leave us alone.
It was silent in the hospital as I laid there with Garrett. I let the soft sound of the blood dripping carry me away.
“Kaede, our love story won’t end like this.”
My eyes shot open. “Garrett?” I looked up. His eyes were open and smiling, the wound gone, his face alive and warm. “GARRETT!” I threw my arms around him and laughed. “You’re alive! You’re alive!” I showered him with kisses.
“Kaede, I will never leave you again. I was so stupid to leave you twice before. . . but this time I’ll be by you always.” He took my hand and helped me up. We walked into the bright snow as we began our lives together, never separating.
At that moment I woke up to reality. Garrett was lying under me, dead forever. A soft voice drifted throughout the hallway.
“The most important thing in life is love. . .“
