How It Began [Chapter 1]

Ever wondered what supports you?

Grendel gazed out of the glass window, shifting uncomfortably. It was a century after the first attack, and they had swore to attack once again, to gain dominance over Victoria. A sigh escaped his lips as he glanced at the magician’s training.

‘Grendel?’

‘Ah, yes. Creen, what’s the matter now?’

Creen bowed and passed Grendel a slightly crumbled scroll and turned to leave. ‘Wait, where did you find this?’ Grendel asked, frowning slightly.

‘I was coming back from Orbis when someone told me to give this to you,’ Creen answered simply, and pushed open the oak doors.

Grendel gingerly unrolled the scroll, and his eyes widened with horror.

‘Oh my god. They’re coming again.’

Terry circled around the wooden table as he waited impatiently for his two friends, Rain and Veil.

‘Hey, Terry, sorry we’re late. We had -‘

‘Quiet. I think I found something,’ Terry whispered, beckoning them towards another Oak door.

‘That’s a restricted area! Only -‘

‘Oh shut up,’ Terry answered irritably. ‘I was curious what was in this room when I found this.’

He pushed open the door gingerly, making sure that the door didn’t creak. ‘There,’ Terry mumbled as he jabbed a finger at a table. Something that was shaped like a projector was fixed on top of the table. ‘My guess is that this was here for a very long time. But nobody had entered the room for a very long time too,’ Rain said as he slid his finger across the dusty table. He touched something solid.

‘What was that?’ he asked, squinting his eyes at the object.

‘It’s what I found. A book. The weird thing is that the title is made of funny characters.’ Terry answered, picking up the book.

‘Let’s bring this to Grendel. He’ll have answers for sure.’ Veil suggested as he headed towards the Library’s top floor, where Grendel always was.

‘Grendel! We found -‘ Veil burst into the room, but was stopped unexpectedly in his tracks. For the first time in his whole career as a Magician, he had never seen Grendel so stressed out before. Grendel turned towards them and sighed. ‘What is it, now?’

‘This book. We found it at a room,’ Terry said, stepping forward to give it to Grendel. Grendel’s eyes widened and he immediately wiped the dust off the book. ‘The Diary,’ he gasped, and immediately flipped through the pages. They were all blank.

He stood up and entered another door before coming up with some ink. Grendel rubbed the ink onto the pages and soon after, some words began to appear. ‘Magic,’ Grendel muttered, and he turned around to face the trio.

‘You’ve just stumbled onto one of the most ancient of mysteries, the war against the Fairies and the humans,’ Grendel said as he placed the book on his table, all the while frowning. ‘I’m afraid that you would have to find out what caused it, and what happened after that. I’ve just received most disturbing news from a spy I sent to Orbis. The Fairies are all stirring, and they seem to be preparing for war,’ Grendel paused, looked at the shocked faces staring at him, and continued. ‘Apparently, they are also alerting some of the fairies living in the wilderness. Fairies do not gather in such numbers unless they expect a great slaughter.’

Terry shivered. ‘Fairies? Magic users?’

Grendel nodded. ‘Their magic dosen’t have any limitations. They can cast any kind of spells, as long as they have had the right training. As most of the adventurers working for the library are away on other missions, I’m afraid you’re the only ones that can go on this one,’ Grendel stood up and took the book on his table and passed it to Terry. ‘You’ll need that to find out what happened. That is the dairy of one of the people caught in the war. He, or she, was a magic user. So it was most properly, a -‘

A scout burst through the doorway, panting heavily. ‘Grendel! Something is happening to the Jewel that protects the Elinia Port! The magic is fading, and if that happens…’ She ended off, fear written all over her face.

Grendel cursed, and faced the trio. ‘You have to go quickly. I’ll contact you later, now head to Orbis, and may the gods bless you from harm.’

Grendel then followed the scout towards the port. Terry, momentarily stunned by the change of events, acted wearily. ‘Let’s go, guys. Something tells me we’ll have a long mission to complete,’ he muttered, as he stared off at the distance. ‘One that might decide the fate of Victoria.’
