The following will be a scrolling guide that I have written based on the experience of myself and many others, after countless hours of digging up things in forums and blogs. This is a guide based on mostly my own experiences, and is meant to educate others on the risks and rewards of scrolling. Scrolling is all chance, but I hope that my guide can help you bend the factors to make sure you have the best possible chances of success.
This guide will not explain all the math. Countless guides have done so already, and I’m personally not very competent at math. However, I hope that everyone knows that a 100% scroll will work 100% of the time, and 60%s work 60% of the time, 10%s 10% of the time. Cursed scrolls have a 30% or 70% chance of working, and they have the exact same effect – if it works, as a 10 or 60% scroll, respectively. If a curse scroll fails, then there is a 50% chance that it will destroy an item. Fortunately, a cursed scroll will destroy an item less frequently than it would work, or simply fail, especially for 70%s.
I hope you all know how to use a scroll. But if you don’t, then don’t worry. Each scroll has a corresponding colour, and if you forget, you can always hover your mouse over the scroll to check. The corresponding colours are:
1. 100% – Light Blue
2. 70% – Light Grey
3. 60% – Red
4. 30% – Dark Purple
5. 10% – Light Yellow
100% scrolls always work, but they have minimal bonuses. 60% scrolls are usually the best, because they balance bonuses and chance of working. 10%s have the least chance of working, but the greatest bonuses.
70 and 30%s are cursed scrolls. They are the exact same as 60 or 10%s, except that they have a higher chance of initial success, but it has a 50% chance of destroying an item if you fail.
For this reason, in most cases, the price of a scroll of a certain type will usually follow this order:
30%s (most expensive), 70%, 60%, 10%, 100%.
Why else? 30 and 70%s are usually the most expensive, because they are extremely rare. They only come from Gachapon and certain high leveled quests. 60%s are expensive because of its balance. 10%s are very expensive for certain items they are really good for it. 10% claw and 10% glove attacks are famous examples of the best 10%s to use, because of the massive gains. 100%s are usually bought from the NPC, but certain 100% scrolls are also quite valuable.
Also, make sure that you have the right type of scroll. Each scroll works for a different type of item, so be wary that you don’t buy the wrong scroll.
This section is somewhat disorganized, and it will burn your eyes, but it contains tons of useful information that you can gleam…
Basilmarket is your friend. Use it to check the price of scrolls and scrolled items, and sell scrolled items here when possible, or use it to gauge the price to sell it in the FM or in your store.
Always use your best judgment. Don’t ever do stupid things, like use a 10% on an 8 ATK 1 slot Work Glove.
Remember, each scroll has its own use:
10%s are for the first slot of a clean item, only. It has to be clean, and it has to be the first slot, otherwise you’re wasting your time.
30%s are good for the 2nd slot of an already 10%ed item, to attempt to elevate the status of the item to truly “godly”.
60%s are for all purpose scrolling. You can scroll an entire item with 60%s. Otherwise, its good for finishing the middle of an item, or ending an item.
70%s are for the final slots of an already excellently scrolled item. Otherwise, its not worth the cost.
100%s are used when you’re really poor, and you need some minor gain for little money. You can usually buy most 100% scrolls from NPCs (Non Player Characters) for a cheap price. Weapon scrolls cost 69-70k, while armor scrolls cost 34-35k. But scrolls not coming from NPCs tend to cost a lot, excluding cape HP/MP scrolls, which are literally worthless.
Don’t expect all non-100% scrolls to work. It is only expected that if you use 7 60%s on your weapon, that only 4 or 5 will work. Don’t expect more than that, and sometimes, its better to buy prescrolled items.
There are certain items / times that are meant for 100%s. Items such as most capes and weapons of levels lower than 50 are good for 100%s. After level 50, all equips should be 60%ed if possible, and if you’re feeling suicidal, 10% it. 10% is only for a high risk, high gain scrolling project. Make sure you know what you’re doing, and expect it to fail. My scrolling actually seems to go better when I’m pessimistic.
Do not ever use scrolls on non clean items. Also, if you are using scrolls, you should use every attempt to find an above average item. It usually won’t cost all that much more, but it will be literally priceless if the scrolling goes well.
You can’t go emo when most of your scrolls fail. Or even all of them. Or when a cursed scroll destroys your godly item. I’ve had my share of bad experiences, everyone who scrolls does. And never, ever use all of your scrolls when they fail. I’m sick and tired of hearing, “Oh, my Scarab is 34 ATK 0 slots, I failed 7 60%!”.
Make sure you confirm the stats of your item and your scroll first, before you use it. Check the stats and the slots, make sure you don’t scroll something wrongly. Read my 4th story to find out why. . .
One last thing. There are 2 types of math that explain how frequently a scroll will work. 1 is the chance that exactly how many scrolls will work. E.g., the chance of exactly 7 60% scrolls of working is 2.79936%. To calculate the chance of exactly X scrolls working, use the chance of the scroll (in decimal form) to the power of the number of scrolls you’re aiming for. E.g., 5/7 60%. 5 ^ .6 = 7.776%. If you don’t have that kind of calculator, then just do: .6 x .6 x .6 x .6 x .6 = 7.776%.
There is also the chance of having at least X scrolls working. That is different from exactly X scrolls working. Pick the one that is more favorable, and hope for the best! (Or worst, if you want.)
There are quite a few scrolling strategies that you can consider. Strategies are ways to build your item with scrolls. But first of all, I must warn you, try to buy one scroll at a time, and don’t let excitement make you waste a lot of money. Even though it takes time, and you want to rush and pay more for a scroll, don’t do that. Take it one step at a time. Stockpiling scrolls is definitely a bad idea, unless you know that you can resell them for profit. So take it one at a time, until you finish your picture, because then, you won’t mess up.
1. Pure 100% FTW!!!
This strategy has no math or anything involved at all. You only use this for weak weapons, or things that are cheap and need to be scrolled, E.g. Earrings for magical attack. This is definitely not recommended for higher leveled or expensive equips. Just keep these scrolls away from good items.
2. Pure 60%
This is a very smart way to go, for almost anything. You get power, and a good chance at it, too. However, make sure you have money, because this way tends to be more expensive.
3. Pure 10%
NOT RECOMMENDED. DO AT YOUR OWN RISK! Don’t ever do this, unless you are insane and prepared to send several scrolls to their doom! (As well as all the mesos that your scrolls are worth!) Don’t even attempt this unless you already have an item that has 10% that worked on it, and only 1 used slot, and you are utterly insane!
Pure 30% is just stupid, you’re wasting a lot just to get your item destroyed. If you are extremely rich, then go all out on 30%s until you’re satisfied, then switch to 60/70%s. That is a difficult way to get a potentially extremely godly item.
Pure 70% isn’t worth it, its expensive, and at best, one more scroll will work. It is plausible if you’re very rich, but 60%s are usually a lot better, and you won’t have to risk destroying your item.
[Combinations]
Never use 100%s in combination of anything else. These combinations are generally, from how I’ve seen, are the most rewarding.
1. 10% > Rest 60%
This involves getting a clean (hopefully above average) item, and dropping a 10% on it. If it fails, sell it, get another one of that item, and another 10% scroll. If it works, finish it with 60%.
Alternatives: 1. You could sell it as soon as you hit the first 10%.
2. You could also use 70%s at the end, for a higher success rate.
2. 10% > 30% > 60%
This is the easiest way to get a godly item. You have to first hit a 10% on a clean, hopefully above average item. Then, 30% and hope it works. If it does, the excellent. Finish off with 60%s, or 70%s if you can afford it.
If the 10% fails, then get a new one and another 10%. If the 30% fails, then use your judgment. You can continue scrolling or sell it. Both aren’t bad ideas.
10%s are exclusively good for the 1st slot, while 30%s work best on a 2nd slot, or already powerful item. Otherwise, stick with 60%s, or 70%s if you can afford it.
First, I’ll start off with my own, tragic stories.
[I] This was when I first did real scrolling. I dropped 1 10% on my brown bamboo hat, and it failed. I was suprised, but I didn’t learn anything, which was stupid. I later went on to scroll it to about 2X defense. But it was all a waste, I broke one of my own laws, buy scrolling a non-clean, non-scrolled item.
[II] Later on, I did a few small attempts by dropping 10% defense scrolls for top and bottom on my equips. To my suprise, over 30% of them worked, but it yielded no real gains.
[III] I began to rise, but I still haven’t learned. I dropped many defense scrolls on a female sauna robe. After they failed, I kept using them. Needless to say, I was still foolish, and I even wasted a 10% overall dex, creating a 6 slots female sauna robe with default stats -.-
[IV] This is my first real project. I finished many quests, and I was prepared to do some real scrolling. An attack glove. At that time, 10% glove attacks were 600-700k, and 60% was 1.7 – 2M. I first used a 60% on the glove, and I did learn something then, and I was happy. But later, a bunch of sad events occurred. I can’t really remember, but many bad events in real life or in game happened, and I was pissed and on the verge of quitting MS. I was slightly uplifted however, when my friend found a 10% glove attack scroll from a sentinel. I really felt like the F7 face, and in light despair, I dropped it on my 2 ATK 4 slot Work Glove. I just broke one of my biggest rules. But to my utter surprise and exuberance, it worked! I couldn’t tell you how happy I was. But then, I got greedy. When I got a 10% glove attack from Jane and the Wild Boar, I used it. What a fool I was. It failed. I actually almost cried over this. A person on Basil flamed me, because I had the glove on auction to see how much it was worth, and then he refused to buy a crappy glove.
However, I struck gold when Orbis’ new quest, “To a New World” was first released. I saw that I could get a good attack scroll, so I did the quest. To my insane and utter amazement, I actually received the coveted 60% glove attack, a rare find. I used it, and it worked! 7 ATK, 1 slot, one more to go. Later, I gathered all my money to buy a 60%. It was make it or break it. I found one for cheap, and I used it, closing my eyes… For the love of God, it actually worked as well! I am too damned lucky. I sold it for 14.5 M (A fair price for it then, but it has since inflated now), and I moved forward to begin my next scrolling project. . . (Story 5)
[IV] Story #4 occurs after story 3 and 5, but I have to tell this first, because it isn’t nearly as sad.
I got a 10% Glove Attack scroll. Guess what? I used it on a clean Work Glove, and it failed. 3 M down the drain, Oh well.
Then a week later, my friend obtains a 10% glove attack scroll. He decides to use it. So as I’m talking to him on the phone, beside him in game, he uses it on a Work Glove that he retrieved from his mule.
And it works. We cry in maniacal insanity, it was the happiest day of my Maple Life since I came back, 5 months ago. But then it was not to be. If you’ve read my blogs, then you’d know. That glove started with 4 slots, so that working scroll changed it to 3 ATK 3 Slots. I nearly went emo (not literally). I was just very sad. So sad, that I bought another 10% Glove Attack scroll, which costed 3,199,999 mesos. My friend would give me the glove to use it on. It would be the “purity tester” of that glove, as my friend and I decided. Guess what?
It failed.
I failed.
[V] This breaks so many of my rules. Indeed, I was unorthodox, but the real reason I did this was because I was inexperienced. Now, I actually know what to do, I wouldn’t do this again.
I am a sin, a gambling sin. I was one of the strictest followers, and perhaps one of the creators of the Claw>Glove>Stars>Cape rule. I wanted the best claw in the world. I was overambitious, and too lucky for my own good. . .
I synthesized a clean Dark Slain with the stimulator, which added 1 point of Avoidability. Not too shabby, I guess. I then proceeded to buy 7 10% Claw Attack scrolls. Yes, you heard right. Its not a typo. 7 10% Claw Attack scrolls. You’re probably pointing at me and screaming “NOOB!” right now, but I actually did it.
When everything was set, I proceeded to go into the FM in my lucky numbers. Channel 17, FM 21. I turned off all chat, and I chanted. I was too excited, my heart was beating too quickly. I had no self restraint. That would ultimately be my downfall. I used all 7 of the scrolls, and this, the following is what happened:
Work
Work
Fail
Work
Fail
Fail
Fail
I’m serious. 41 Attack, 7 LUK, 0 slots. But its a failure of a scrolling project. It wasn’t above average. I should have switched to 60%s. Heck, if I did everything right, I could have scrolled it to 50 ATK. But no! I’m just an idiot! I ended up selling it for 22M, the highest price anyone would pay. . . It was on auction for over a week, and that was the only half fair offer I got. I still remember that fateful day, and it was the ultimate reason why I quit MS. Damnit, May 2006!
Later, I checked my inventory. I was extremely surprised and angered that I saw 3 60% claw attack scrolls, scrolls that I bought for this current scrolling project. Maximum potential? 47 attack, or even 50 – 51 attack, if I used an above average slain. T_T
I hope that you now know my pain, and learned something off it.
Yes, make sure you keep a steady hand while scrolling. Don’t accidentally drop it, especially not in a crowd.
Anyway, long story short, 6 worked, and there was 1 slot left. Last scroll, I opened my inv and equip windows,
Fail ;-;

[E1] Scrolling Theories
This is merely a section dedicated to another part of scrolling. If you have a theory about scrolling, or how scrolling works, these contributions may go here.
[I] My Theory
My theory on how scrolling works is quite simple. Scrolling is done by rolling a die. The dice roll is completely randomized, by both the server and your computer’s CPU clock. It makes a roll, different for each scroll. For each scroll, it makes a roll out of 100. If the roll is equal or lesser than the % of the scroll, then it will work.
E.g. 60% scroll, the computer makes a random roll, which is further randomized by the server. Lets say, you roll 37. 37 < 60, so the scroll works. But lets say, you use another 60%, and the roll turns out to be 85. 85 > 60, so it will fail. This is the same for other scrolls, except the value to beat is different. 10% = < 10, 30% = < 30, etc.
*Note, the roll could be equal or less than the %, not just lesser*
If a curse scroll fails, I believe it will make a second roll, out of 50. If it exceeds 50, then you lose the item. If it is 50 or below, the scroll just fails, and you keep the item.
[II] Annikabelle’s Theory
Lift the scroll over the item .
Close your eyes and hope it will pass .
Let go of the scroll over the equipment.
Open your eyes and see if it has passed .

Of course! This lets you pass the excitement without fainting and such. A great idea.
This has been quite a lengthy guide (for me to type). If you have any contributions or suggestions, or a scrolling story that you want to be made public, please post them in the comments box, or PM me. You will be credited. Any suggestions, complaints, and corrections are also welcome. Make sure you contact me if I have taken anything without giving proper credit.
Thank you for reading this lengthy guide (for me to type, yet again), and I hope that you have learned something.

Adding to my favorites It’ll come in hady later and I’ll probably forget it Nice guide though!
Thanks to all contributors and compliments. It is greatly appreciated
mizuuko, If you want to post this on your page, would you mind giving me the URL of the page? I’ll think about it. Most importantly, the credits can not be changed, and hopefully not much is lost in translation. I also hope that none of the contributors mind.
@ Fenrir: I guess I’m a gambler then. XD
@ Devilrymage: 3/7 is quite good. I only spent 5.5 M on all the scrolls and the slain, but I got 3/4, in the beginning. Later, I also found out that I had 3 60% claw attack scrolls, and the terrifying potential for my slain really got me annoyed.
Version 1.02
Added more stories, made more corrections. Mizzuko’s Polish MS website can host this as long as the credits are still there, and it stays as true to the original as possible. She can edit it to make it make sense in the Polish language.
Thanks again to all contributions, compliments and comments
I don’t get it. . why is 30% better for the 2nd slot, and not the first? I mean, if you use a 30% and it explodes your first-slot-10%’ed item, wouldn’t you have just lost a whole bunch?
EDIT: are they even out yet? o.o
30% is better for the second slot because of its extreme price and rarity. You can’t just go 30% all the way, because it is surely cheaper to hit the first slot via 10%, rather than 30%. 30% scrolls are rarely for sale, and I believe that they would cost several times, probably 4 – 8x as much as 10%.
EDIT: They are out. Because of their extreme rarity, the price is extremely high. You only find them from Gachapon and certain quests (I think 7-9X) quests.
EDIT 2: There are cheap 30/70% scrolls, but those scrolls are usually for things like topwear defense.
It’s funny because you think it’s lengthy and i find it skimpy (no offense)
it’s pretty good though
it’s pretty good though”
Eh, sorry. Its late here, and I’m losing my focus. I could make it lengthy by explaining a lot more than is useful or I care to, and triple the size and such. Actually, it is a short (maybe not concise guide).
Thanks for the compliment
it’s pretty good though”
I’m not a skank. Oh, that’s not what you said? It’s late here too I’m losing also losing my focus.

Lmao. I did edit it, to say that it was lengthy for me to type =D
If I’m correct there is this item called the slime eraser which helps you take away 1 used slot from your scrolled item, along with the stat bonuses of the last scroll used if there were any. I do not know if it actually works or not but if it does, it is possible to get 7 10%s.
Anyway nice guide =P
Oh and about scrolling stories, I once wanted to scroll my meba with a 100% claw attack. I happened to be in the Free Market and, well, accidentally released the mouse halfway while dragging the scroll to the item. And you know once you drop anything in the Free Market ch 1 there is no hope of salvaging it whatsoever. So technically 100%s can fail *F4*.
Anyway nice guide =P”
Thanks for the compliment and the contribution.
I will put most contributions in section [VIII] Credits, Contributions and Contributors.
Thanks for the story and warning as well
Thanks for the compliment and the contribution.

Remember this is not verified. NOT verified.
There’s also an item called a Mushmom Eraser. Gachapon-only item. I’m not sure about what devilry claimed, but these items do exist, and they are only available from Gachapon.
Updates are posted, and I also posted that the slime eraser wasn’t verified, among other small updates and fixes. I’ll be sleeping now, its 1:24 AM here, and I have to wake up around 9 AM tomorrow.
EDIT: One last update. Added my own stories, and a new section dedicated to theories on how scrolling works, or how to use scrolls for the best results. Also added Indescane’s contribution and made more minor fixes.
I don’t care about scrolls! XP
But its good for them gamblers on scrolls! XD
Um 3 out of 7 10% scrolls working IS good. The only reason why you didn’t gain is because 10% scrolls were so dam expensive back then.
*applause for Epic* <3

I was poor, so I couldn’t afford to buy 7 60% Helm Defs all at once for my Maple Bandana, and so I randomly scrolled one whenever I got one cheap >.>;;

I need of course some time and crew decision but I a a webmistress of the biggest Polish page on MS and I’m searching off for good text here – hence my question is: would you agree if I’d translate this and giving you a credit posted it on our page?
O Epic one! I forgot to add this: Cursed scrolls drop from monsters in SEA. So far, Zipangu monsters have given me quite a few. But if you are writing for just Global, then forget about this. :X
You really like calling him O Epic one, do you?
What’s with people stealing stuff that I make up?
I dunno. Who started the Epic One thing. . .?
Oh. You. :X I’m sorry, but it really does stick to the brain. You don’t really mind it, right?
Gambling is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.

Ok , now its <insert name here> One . Interesting . Thanks for this guide . I never did care about this . I just took out the scroll and wait for teh blue light to appear . >.<
