by municipal law to go through monthly check-ups.
The doctor, Dr. Mang, was checking her blood pressure. Malon, and Mrs. Pei were in the room too.
Dr. Mang asked in Mandarin, “Take a deep breath please,” as he grabbed the stethescope.
Mrs. Pei repeated his request in English.
Alysha did so, grunting as the icy metal thing touched her back.

Part Nine: Big Fat History Lesson

The one common question you hear from many people is “Where on the planet did these hackers come from?”
Many of the hacker horror films proposed that hackers are aliens from outer space, or that they were the product of a genetic experiment gone horribly wrong.
In the 1988 movie ‘Ellinia Underground,’ the story tells us that the people in Ellinia secretly harbored and nurtured a hacker population that threatens to take over Victoria.
A theory proposed by mentally defunct scientist Ash Woodstock claims that hackers where flawed magicians expelled from their communities, and to increase their powers, they electrocuted themselves.
And of course, all the people who are religiously insane say that hackers (and magicians too) are abominations– the devil’s scouts injected into this world from hell. read more

Part 8: The Morals of Training

We boarded the bus leaving Kerning City at 6 in the morning, heading east along the Warning Street Highway through the Swamplands. The freeway is merely a wide boardwalk bridge stretching for nearly 30 miles through swamp and thick bog.
Malon, Cletus and I pondered Alysha Erickson’s legal victory. The court hearing, which lasted about 90 minutes was an emotional experience for all of us.
As dawn comes, a thick fog swallows the bus as it rolls forward. We just passed a sign marking the county line between Kerning County and DG County. DG stands for Dangerous Kroko. The kroko-gators out here are known for their ferocity and viciousness. Upon crossing the county border, we are all aware that we have left the safety zone for hackers. Out here, hackers, both civillian and with any of the four main jobs, are open game to the GMs and vigilantes lurking throughout Victoria. read more

Part 5: Hacker Rehab

It’s Monday, and we have been in 7ung Hwang for two days now, staying at a youth hostel down the street from the Toa Payoh hacker residence. Over the weekend, Alysha consulted a lawyer about the death warrant.
The attorneys at Bluebird Associates conduct their legal work defending hackers in court. They specialize in protecting civillian hackers from the long arms of the law, which they say is repeatedly twisted and broken by the city courts.
Alysha was sent on referral by the counselor at her school. The lawyer, Mr. Fred Yeung, was assigned to the case. He agreed to speak to us.
“I looked over the copy of the warrant and the other papers the girl handed to me. This is an easy case. This warrant is illegal because, Ms. Erickson is living within the safety zone, which covers both Kerning and Yazhou. The judge who authorized this warrant overlooked the laws that protect hackers’ rights.”
Mr. Cheung assured Alysha and her school counselor that the warrant will be negated within a week. read more
