Chapter one (Regret)

“Axel! I’m so glad you’re awake!” said a soft voice. “You took a hit to the head, you’re lucky it came from a blunt weapon or you’d be dead!”

Axel sat up and surveyed his surroundings. “Ugh…” murmured Axel, “What happene–”

His words were cut off by a sharp pain in his head. “OWWWW!” He called, his wound starting a thumping headache.

The female figure let out another soft laugh. “Please lie down, your wounds aren’t fully healed yet.”

Axel rubbed his eyes, the voice recognizable to him. “K-Kyrii?” he inquired.

Kyrii simply smiled, the same way she did when they were kids. He looked up at her, smiling back. She was a innocent looking female with black hair going down a little past her shoulders. Her attire was always blue, black or a combination of them. Her eyes were a sincere red. Kyrii didn’t look much of a fighter.

‘I feel… warm… what is this feeling….? Is it… no…. It can’t be… she’s my best friend… and yet…’ thought Axel, laying on his back as Kyrii had asked.

Kyrii was leaving the room. Visiting hours were over. Before she was gone, Axel’s voice called after her.

“Wait!”

She turned around, wondering what was wrong.

“I was wondering if-” his sentence was once again interrupted, but not by pain. There was an earth trembling explosion in the East Wing of the hospital.

“Dear lord!” exclaimed Kyrii. “It’s too early! You aren’t fully healed yet!” The scared friend quickly grabbed hold of Axel and started teleporting down the hospital’s rubble filled hallways. Fire had soon caught in the rooms, and she had no choice but to drag her friend to a window and leapt out, cradling his limp body in her arms.

“Kyrii,” said Axel, “Thank you…”

They landed perfectly, though Kyrii wobbled a bit when she stood from her crouch. She continued to teleport, all the while looking down at her friend that she was carrying, and smiled.

Axel at this point was still badly wounded, He had long red hair, aqua eyes and a few abrupt, yet distinct, facial features. His choice of armor included baby blue or crimson red. Due to his injuries, he had a bandage covering his forehead.

Kyrii’s smile wasn’t the same smile as before. In fact, Axel couldn’t determine what it meant. After they’d teleported about five miles away from the quickly burning hospital, Kyrii stopped and put Axel down.

“This should be far enough,” she said, assuring he was still awake.

Axel mustered up the rest of the strength in his being, managing to say, “Do you lo-”

In mid-sentence, his eyes rolled to the back of his head. He passed out before he could finish, it seemed he would never be able to ask that question.

“Axel? AXEL!?!” cried Kyrii, checking his pulse. Still beating. ‘Good‘ she thought, ‘he’s only passed out. I wonder, though, what he was going to say… It sounded like “do you love me”… but that couldn’t be right, he’s my best friend, after all,‘

Kyrii glanced back at the building under siege. “I can’t believe this happened, how did THEY find us?”

It had been weeks, and Axel turned out okay from many a day’s sleep. They were back in their army encampment, and it was early morning.

“WAKE UP, TROOPS,” yelled the army commander. “WE HAVE A ROUGH DAY AHEAD!” Many complaints came from soldiers who were still half asleep in their rooms at the base. ‘Unghhh’, ‘Arghh’, and ‘It’s too early…’ were just a few of them.

Axel and Kyrii met in the hallway, while assembling into a line formation. They said nothing, due to the commander watching them. The last few weeks had been spent in awkward small talk, nothing like how they used to talk.

“Alright, troops,” said the commander, “A few weeks ago, our medical building was blown up. There were only two survivors, any guesses to who they were?”

Axel saluted and said, “Me and Kyrii, sir?” His words bit through the air like bullets.

“That’s correct, soldier. Now tell me, Axel, who saved you?” replied the commander.

“Kyrii, sir!” Axel said, still saluting. It had taken a lot out of him not to mumble that.

“Kyrii, why is it that you only were able to save yourself and Axel? Why couldn’t you take some other of the patients?” asked the commander crossly, stopping in front of the girl.

“Commander…I-I don’t..I just don’t know,” replied Kyrii, “I just wasn’t thinking. The explosion happened so fast…”

“Oh really?” asked the commander, “And all you could think about was saving your boyfriend?” He stared into her eyes, seemingly piercing her soul. She seemed to shrink under his demanding prowess.

“Sir! In all respect, he is not my boyfriend, nor do we exhibit any relations!” exclaimed Kyrii, blushing ever so slightly. “We’re just friends, sir!” at this point Kyrii was starting to ask herself questions. Did she love him? She was so confused, but kept the makeup of a faithful soldier to the commander.

“Hmph. Something has to be done about this,” announced the commander, “Kyrii, You are banished from squadron A. You will transfer to squadron B starting tomorrow. Dismissed!”

The formation dis-assembled and began back to their rooms, Kyrii however, didn’t budge.

Axel noticed this, he came up to her and whispered “It’s okay”

“Axel…” Replied Kyrii softly, she was about to cry “What were you going to say before you passed out?”

Axel panicked, he wasn’t expecting this. “I was going to say Do you love me? but it doesn’t matter anymore. We’re not in the same squadron”

Tears were rolling down Kyrii’s face “I do, That’s why It’s not okay”
